I stand up, letting out a deep breathe. My nerves rack my body as I walk up to the podium. I hold onto my paper for dear life, my knuckles becoming white.I would be more confident if there was more than one person doing a speech but no. My school decided to do a raffle for the one senior that would make a speech for graduation. And of course, I got to be that "lucky" senior.
I'm just happy that I remembered to write a speech. It's not a lame short speech either. Adam helped me with some of the wording and it has great a message. The problem is me. I'm too terrified to read in front of the class, let alone all of the staff and seniors in the school!
I stand there and wait for the principals cue to start talking. He gives me a signal and I take another deep breathe.
"During these 12 years of school, I have learned some valuable things. Life's not easy and it's no where near fair. You may get held back but do you give up? No. Never give up. Find a different way to deal with the problem. Don't sit back and I say,
"I can't do it." You may not be able solve the problem in the easiest way but you have to find another solution. And in doing that, you'll realize that things can get better if you power through and let that be possible. Just believe.
Also, you shouldn't care what others think. If they don't like you, let it go. Not everyone will like you for being you but that is their problem. In all honesty, the haters are going to hate. And what you have to do in that is let them dislike and move on. Don't let them bring you down because you know that you can get back up again. If they aren't a positive source in you life, move on. Get away from that negativity and find something happier. But in order to be happy, you have to happy with yourself first. In order for that you have to accept yourself and don't let anyone change that perspective of yourself. Never let anyone hold you back from what you need to get accomplished. Don't care what others think because in reality, it's their loss IF you move on.
In summary of this very long speech of my findings during my school years is that life is too short to focus on the inconveniences. Plus, "You should be proud of yourself and own who you are and NEVER make apologies for it."When I say those words my eyes connect with Adam's and he smiles at my choice of words. He had no clue that I put his quote in my speech and I can sense his proudness through his gaze.
"These may not be easy things to accomplish but you have to believe in yourself even if life goes down hill.
It has been a good start to our life's and may it grow even better."I end my speech with a nod and the courtyard bursts with applause. I walk back down to my seat and the people around me congratulate me on my "incredible" speech. I didn't think it was that good but I guess it was.
"Thank you Skyler for being the last act of the evening," the principal says. "I am so proud of all of you. May there be good futures ahead of all of you. The class of 2015 has officially graduated!"
All of us students stand and throw or caps into the air. A feeling of happiness rushes over me. A feeling of accomplishment.
Alexis comes running over and gives me a tight hug. "Skyler! We made it!!"
"I know!" I say with tears forming in my eyes. I can't help the joy.
"Don't cry or else I'm gonna cry and we are gonna be mess." She says with a shakes voice, trying to hold back.
I let out a laugh as strong arms wrap around me from behind.
"Love birds," Alexis says as she walks backwards away from us.
"Hey, no," I say as I turn around to Adam who has a thinking face going. I turn back around to Alexis and she has retreated to her family. Nice escape.
