"We are here," Gary said as they got to the gates of the mansion. He helped Leaf climb down a rock and led her closer to the iron gate. "Be careful. It is very rocky here," he said quietly.

"Where are we?" Leaf asked and shivered, holding Gary's hand as she walked across the rocky ground hesitantly. She held her white fur coat closer to her body as the wind blew on her face. She can feel the chill down her spine. "It is so cold here."

Gary looked at Leaf who was standing behind him in one place, shivering like an abandoned baby. He sighed and walked toward her. Without any warning, he held her up in his arms and towards the gate. "The deeper we go into the forest, the colder it gets, especially in the winter," Gary informed. "Let me open up the gate so that we can get in. Maybe it will be warmer inside."

Leaf nodded in Gary's neck while holding him closer. It is too cold for her to think of anything. It was warm just the night before. Now, it was freezing as if they were in the middle of a blizzard.

"I swear, this crazy weather. They should have given us a weather forecast last night! When I get home, I will stay next to the fireplace," Leaf complained next to Gary's ears like a spoiled child.

Gary just shook his head and opened the gates to walk in as his ears turned. From the gates to the mansion, there was still some distance to walk. The path to the mansion door was old with cracks, mostly made from the wedges of the winter and spring. The large plot of land, which seemed to be a garden, was unrecognizable. From the gates, Gary and Leaf can see the cobwebs on the windows in the darkness within. There was also something spooky leaking out from the mansion as if eyes were following their every move, as they walked closer.

After a while, Gary and Leaf reached the front door of the mansion. Very carefully, Gary pushed the door in, only to be met with thick layers of dust. He placed Leaf down after they walked in and closed the door. Leaf looked around the mansion with curiosity. Everything around them was in shambles, destroyed and broken with a thick layer of dust covering them. The wall pain also faded and changed colors. The carpet was hard and lost its colors. On the walls, the photo frames were smashed with no photos inside. Despite the mansion being empty, it was warm.

Leaf turned red when she landed on her feet. She dusted herself as she muttered under her breath. No one can blame her for hugging Gary when it was cold. She didn't want to freeze herself. Her thoughts were disrupted when she looked at her surroundings. Leaf gasped at the sight. "Gary, have you never been to this place before?" she asked, turning toward the man behind her, who was inspecting the broken work on the ground.

Gary looked up at the girl. "No. This is the first time I have been here. I have never seen this place before," he said.

"From the things that were left behind, this mansion has been here for years! It would be impossible to not see this place!" Leaf exclaimed. Her voice echoes through the empty building before it ends. Leaf quickly covered her mouth and didn't speak, fearing that her voice may alert something in the abandoned mansion.

"I am not sure. I really have never seen this before," Gary shook his head.

Leaf nodded her head and didn't continue. If Gary said he didn't see it then he didn't see it. She continued wandering around with caution and interest. As someone who loves reading and mystery, the mansion sparked a newfound joy and excitement in her. After walking around the main lobby, she explored the rest of the house with a candle, lit by Gary to make sure she didn't lose her way.

Everything around her was broken and covered with a layer of dust and cobwebs. The curtains were torn. The windows had cracks. The furniture was all broken and overturned. Everything was covered in dust and webs. Leaf covered her nose and mouth as she wandered around. Her hand with the candle held tight to bring light in the dark rooms and hallways. It seemed as if there was a disaster that happened in the mansion that had stopped time.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, Leaf remembered the legend that her mother told her when she was young, about the beast living in the forest. Her heart raced suddenly as she thought of the many possibilities. A thin layer of cold sweat covers her forehead, the back of her back, and her palms. She tried to breathe quietly through her nose as she began to lose her breath. What if, just what if, the legend was not a legend at all?

"No way. It can't be. But everything seems to be connected," Leaf muttered to herself.

A piece of newfound information filled Leaf as she began to walk unconsciously through the castle. Her eyes frantically looked around for something that she didn't know herself. But one thing she knows for sure, she needs to find it.

"Could this be what my mother had told me about? Before she disappeared?" Leaf wondered, remembering how her mother disappeared the next day after she had told Leaf the story.

Leaf's legs began to walk faster, guiding her through the endless twists and turns of the dark hallway. As if she was possessed, she knew where she had to go. After a while, she told in front of a large double door. Her hands landed on the door handles and without any hesitation, she pushed the door in.

The room looked like the master bedroom, with a large bed at a corner of the room and a table and a chair at the center. Unlike the other broken pieces on the ground, the three pieces of furniture were the only ones that seemed to be clean and recent, as if someone had been in the room not long before. Leaf's courage was gone as she tip-toed around the room, glancing at everything. On the corner of her eye, she saw something glowing ever so softly on the tabletop.

Leaf walked toward it. When she got closer, she saw three things she didn't notice before when she first entered the room. On the table, there was a thick hardcover book and a mirror where the chair sat as if the owner placed the items there before she left. There was also a glowing rose sitting on the glass, blooming beautifully like magic.

Leaf's free hand slowly reached toward the three items when she froze. Feeling as if there were a pair of eyes looking at her, she slowly looked up before letting out a bloody scream.

"AHHHHH!!"
