It was Paul who first broke the silence of the thick atmosphere.
"You say again, who is your mother?" Paul asked as if for clarification to make sure that he didn't hear wrong.
"My mother is Red Green. She lived in the Southern Village and disappeared about a decade ago," Leaf replied.
The image of her mother suddenly popped up in Leaf's mind. How sweet and nice her mother was when she was still around in the house. Her long brown hair, which Leaf inherited, was always swaying with the wind. Her soft smile and the smell of fresh bread around her always made Leaf feel comfortable and warm. For the first time after years of waiting, Leaf felt she was getting closer to her mother.
"Do you guys know her?" Leaf asked, looking at the men around her.
They looked at each other and then looked back at Leaf. Gary swung himself back and forth on the ground and looked up at the ceiling. "Well, I am sure about the others, but I have met Mrs. Green. She is usually the one checking up on me and my father. Well, mostly me since I have the worst symptoms. Anyways, I never really knew her much since she was always hiding around and talking to my parents. She is nice from what I remembered though," Gary responded.
"She is the lady with the red hood, right? And always carries a basket with her?" Ash asked, remembering a memory of a woman in a red cloak outside his door one day. "I remembered her giving me a cookie once."
"Ash!" Drew scowled and slapped Ash on the head, which Ash winced. "Is that the only thing you remembered? Seriously?"
Drew sighed and ran his hand through his hair. "I am pretty sure the rest of us met her at one point in our lives. We just never really interacted with her since she was usually talking with our parents. She is also always wearing a red cloak when she visits us though. We never really understand why. She never shows us her face."
Leaf nodded her head as she listened to them talking about her mother. Her mother was always a mysterious woman. From what she heard from the village after her mother's disappearance, her mother seemed to appear and disappear from nowhere. Unlike the other villagers, she suddenly appeared in the village one day in a red cloak and started to settle in. When she disappeared, no one knew where she went or saw her ever since.
"My mother disappeared years ago, and I haven't seen her since. No one really talked about her and treated her as if she just disappeared," Leaf said.
"We are sorry for your loss, Leaf. If you agree to help us with Gary, we will also help you to find your mother," Ash said, looking at Leaf.
"Thank you, Ash," Lead replied.
"Moving on to the main topic, you and Gary will have to leave in a few days to go back to the forest to find the mansion. You know, the very old and abandoned mansion in the middle of nowhere? That was a magic mansion, which appears and disappears out of nowhere. We need to find it and hopefully find some clues in there about the curse," Paul stated strategically once everyone was done talking.
"You mean the old mansion that Gary and I went exploring?" Leaf asked. She remembered the old mansion where she got her book, mirror, and rose from.
Gary looked at Leaf and smiled at her. "That is the one. We have been searching for that mansion for years now and have never achieved it. It wasn't until you showed up that we caught a glimpse of the place," Gary explained to Leaf. "The mansion is where my parents and your mom, as well as the past researchers, meet to research about the curse. Inside the mansion, it was said that it contains important information about the curse and the research done so far."
In Leaf's mind, she suddenly thought of the book she had with her in her bag. Inside was full of entries from the previous people talking about the curse. Would it be that the mansion has more information about the curse?
Leaf shook her head. The mansion was magical, old, and abandoned. It would take forever to look through everything in the messy place, with the mess, the dust, and broken furniture. However, it doesn't dismiss the possibility that there might be some clues among the mess. Then what about the mirror and the rose? Would that mean anything at all? Would everything be connected?
All these questions flew into Leaf's mind as she thought about the mansion and the items she connected in there. The more she thought about it, the more things didn't make sense to her, yet also made sense.
"What are you thinking about, Leaf?" Gary asked Leaf.
Leaf returned from her thoughts and looked around when she noticed the others were gone. "Where are the others," she asked instead of answering the question.
"Oh, they left since they have some other things to deal with. So, back with you. What were you thinking?" Gary asked again. His full attention was a Leaf.
Leaf realized that Gary must not have remembered or knew about the mirror and rose in her possession. She didn't think much about them since she was unsure about it herself. It would be better to just let Gary know about it later after she had figured it out.
"Oh, I was just thinking about some stuff. This would be the first time I ever felt so close to being with my mom after she disappeared. I suddenly felt hopeful that everything will be fine," Leaf sighed.
"You must love your mom," Gary said, looking at Leaf.
"Yea, I do. I really only have good memories of her. She is my mother, after all. I miss her a lot," Leaf said.
Gary didn't say anything and just stayed silent. "Well, I hope we can help find your mother. I also want to meet her one day as well. She seems like a wonderful person, from you and my parents."
