Chapter 21: Neighbors

I was walking home alone on the sidewalk. And right when I was passing by my neighbors house, a little girl with white hair and blue eyes came running towards me. I fell to the ground with her on top of me. I then saw her parents running toward us.

"S-sorry miss." The girl said.

I smiled eyes closed and replied, "Don't worry about it."

"Yuki! What were you thinking!" Her father said.

Her mother helped me up and said "I am so sorry about that."

"It's noting."

The father smiled at me and said "So, you are the neighbor with the boyfriend."

I blushed and shook my head "No no no! We are not even close as friends!"

The mother and father laughed and the mother said "I'm Maya, Yuki's mother."

I nodded. "I am Sora, Yuki's father."

I nodded and introduced myself, "It's a pleasure to meet you! I'm Fumiko."

We shook hands and I squatted down to the height of the girl and smiled eyes closed "Did you get hurt when you fell in top of me?"

The little girl shook her head shyly, I then stood up right and Maya said "Would you like to come for dinner?"

I shook my head, "Oh, no no. I wouldn't like to-"

"We don't mind having someone for dinner." Sora said.

I then nodded and ate with my new neighbors. They are sure good people.

After we finished eating, I help Maya clean the dishes when I heard Yuki coughing really hard. Maya and Sora rushed at her side with worried faces.

I then looked at them shocked and went next to Maya and putted my hand on her shoulder and asked, "Is she ok?"

"Yes, can you please pass me that medicine over there." She said pointing at the counter. I took the liquid medicine and gave it to her with a spoon.

Yuki drank it with a cup of water. After that, Yuki came up to me and pulled my school skirt and said "Can you read me a story?"

I looked at Maya shocked. Maya nodded and I looked at Yuki and took a children's book.

I read it to Yuki with her sitting on my lap. And when I finished and closed the book, Yuki was sleeping on my lap.

I took her on my arms and tugged her in bed.

I went down stairs after tugging Yuki and saw Sora and Maya looking at me serious. I looked at them shocked and Maya putted her hand on my shoulder and said "Can we talk?"

I nodded shyly and thought "What's going on?"

We sat on the living room. Sora and Maya held their hands. I could see them worried by the expression in their eyes, and how tightly did Maya held her husband's hand.

Sora then said "Fumiko, thank you."

I looked at him shocked, "For what?"

Maya then replied with her voice cracking "For making her smile and happy." Maya stood up with a napkin on her hand and said "Excuse me."

Sora then said "Fumiko, Yuki... she has... c-cancer."

I looked at him shocked, "W-what?"

He nodded and said "They found it about 3 weeks ago."

I then looked at the floor sadly and stood up saying "Sorry, but, I have to go."

I opened the door crying. I entered my house crying and thinking "Y-Yuki, just a l-little girl, having something like that."

I began crying thinking about Yuki's future, thinking like if I were in her parents place.

After finishing crying, I took a shower and did homework. I then went to sleep still thinking about Yuki.
