"Kian?" A female voice called out.
The feeble tone of the voice froze Kian like someone had thrown him into the ice the moment he recognised it. It may have been a year since he last heard it, but it was a tiny voice in his head he could never forget.
And despite the icy way he felt, Esmé's hand in his felt like scorching heat. He let it go instantly as he turned, holding his breath in the voice's direction, hoping he heard wrong. Albeit the hope, the sinking feeling in his stomach told him all he needed to know.
Kian felt a sudden tightness in his chest as he took her in. Her full-blown smile that he rarely saw sprung up on her face, giving her face the glow his heart skipped for. Her timid movements, casting her striking ocean blue eyes downwards and tucking her hair behind her ears, were further confirmation of who she was, yet the words that left his mouth escaped in form of a question.
"K... Kristin?"
A simple nod and the smile still fixed on her face drove a rush of emotions through Kian in disbelief. Heat flushed through his body in anger at the fact that she stood there with a smile on her face like everything was okay. His eyes turned intensely cold looking at her, the representation of everything he had run from the past year.
"What are you doing here?" His voice came out sharp and deep, ready to pierce anything in its path.
Esmé flinched by his side, but Kristin's smile only faltered a bit and that unnerved him.
"I—I thought I'd find you here since you weren't at the hospital or your home address, you told ..."
"Stop talking!" Kian growled out through gritted teeth.
Everyone by their side stopped to stare, shocked at the sudden growl. Kian felt the stare, but he was more focused on the person in front of him and the bulge of her eyes staring at him.
"I don't care how you found me here, Kristin. I want to know what you're doing back here."
Kristin winced, staring at Kian with a pained expression at the question.
She didn't have to reply, Kian already knew her answer. His steps faltered backwards at the look in her eyes. "No."
He couldn't believe she had the nerve to come back for the same reason she left. His fists tightened and his body shook in anger. "Get out!"
Kristin's eyes widened further and took a step forward. "Ki..." His glare halted her steps but didn't stop the tears that pooled in her eyes as she shook her head, trying to get him to understand. "I'm so sorry. I didn't want to leave like that then. It just—it was just too much, Ki..."
"Just leave, Kristin! You were no help then, you would not be any help now," he spat out angrily and stormed past her. His muscles quivered and veins pulsed as he walked on.
Her reason for coming back swam in his head. He had run away from thinking about that time of his life so much; he didn't even realize the date was near. His father's one year death anniversary.

Esmé stood frozen and speechless at the scene in front of her. She thought she had seen Kian angry before, but the scenario in front of her proved her wrong a million times over.
