Captivating ocean blue eyes gazed up at him. Her hand tucking her chocolate brown hair behind her ear. Her lush cupid's bow lips lifted in a full-blown smile.
Kristin.
She was everywhere, from the dark corners of his mind to the front layers of his thought, and it was driving him crazy. Every memory, thought and feeling he blocked out for the past year behind a door in his mind awoke to fight for freedom.
By the early hours of the morning, his dishevelled hair and the bags that lay heavily beneath his eyes were the evidence of his night battle. Kian groaned as he summoned all the strength he could muster to get up from his bed. He had spent the last one year trying not to be an emotional mess, and he wasn't about to let that all go to the wastelands.
With that thought driving through him, he switched into an automatic mode and got ready for work. Being a doctor that ensured people's safety was his go-to for a sane mind.
His focused mind got him all the way to the hospital, locking out all and every form of distracting thought. Kian welcomed the antiseptic smell that greeted him on his arrival at the hospital with great pleasure. The buzzing of telecoms and murmurs from around the house further helped keep all his thoughts at bay.
Nurses sprung into action at his presence, doing things they didn't even need to do. By the time Kian reached the lobby desk, every nurse had their hands full.
"G - good mor..." The nurse behind the desk spoke but stopped once Kian's red eyes glare reached her.
He wasn't in need of unnecessary small talk that could give way to the emotions that struggled at every passing moment to be set free.
"My schedule."
His sharp tone got the nurse doubling over in her seat, scrambling to get his schedule for him while trying not to make a mess of herself. She failed miserably, letting pieces of paper on her desk fly about, but was fast enough to get Kian's schedule out for him before he lost his patience.
He grabbed the schedule from her and moved on to the direction of his office after briefly checking the room number of his first patient to check up.
Keep going. Just get busy and soon it would all be forgotten.
"Kian?"
He grimaced at the sound of Petra's voice. His fist tightened as he turned to face her. He thought he had evaded her, just like he had with Esmé that morning.
Kian studied her tired but piercing gaze as she watched him. He didn't need her judging look and wanted to drop all guard just for her, but he needed every bit of his energy to hold his emotions in check. He couldn't afford to let it go to please Petra.
"Nurse Wilson," he said curtly and continued on with his journey. Whatever she made of his reaction was nothing he was going to concern himself with.
