The Ivaneć family had lost so much on that faithful day, they had lost not only their golden daughter but also their first granddaughter.
Esmé didn't understand how her heart would break even further, but he did. She felt so hollow within as she looked at Kian now knowing what he had been hiding from her.
"I'm sorry," he apologized, his gaze locked on hers with intensity. "I know you're stronger than most, but I saw what your death did to your sister and I. I knew you would not take this news well."
"They went through so much pain and I- I was just in a stupid coma..."
Kian shook his head, interrupting her. "No. Don't say that. You didn't come out unscratched yourself, so do not blame yourself. You're here now and that matters." He nudged his head in Zora's direction, who was watching them silently still in her husband's arms.
Esmé sobbed and with Kian's help, got up to meet Zora. They pulled each other into a hug, apologizing to each other.
"You have absolutely nothing to be sorry for, Ivana. Niste dobili glupu žudnju usred noći koju ste mogli kontrolirati. Ako..." (You didn't get a stupid craving in the middle of the night that could have been controlled. If...)
Esmé narrowed her eyes at Zora. "Mislio sam da si rekao da si prebolio krivnju. I volunteered to go, you didn't force me so it's not your fault. I won't have you blaming yourself about it anymore." (I thought you said you were over the guilt.)
Zora sniffed, the corners of her lips tugging up. She pulled Esmé back into a hug. "I missed you. So much."
How can you live the life you to atone for your sins if you're still in a constant state of guilt?
Her words echoed right back in her ears and her eyes locked onto Kian's own right across, which held the same information.
Guilt could have gnawed at her, knowing she hadn't really thought of her sister since she didn't remember her, but she didn't let it.
He had known just what she was going to think or before she even did and that made her heart swell.
"I missed you too, Zora. Thank you. Thank you so much for pushing through everything you went through and living your life."
Kian smiled by the side, happy she hadn't let her guilt take over.
Vera stepped forward and put her hands around her girls with a smile. "Moji mali anđeli." (My little angels.)
"Ja isto! Ja isto! I ja želim zagrljaj!" Ivan shouted running up to them and making them laugh. (Me too! Me too! I want a hug too!)
Vera moved to pick him up from the floor but Esmé moved in first, resting him on her waist.
"Želiš da te teta zagrli?" (You want your aunty to give you a hug?)
"Da!"
Everyone chuckled and she hugged him up there.
"Dobro, Ivan. Tvoja draga teta i njezin gost došli su čak ovamo iz daljine. Mora da su jako umorni." Vladimir spoke up, moving to the mass of individuals. (Alright now, Ivan. Your darling aunt and her guest came all the way here from a distance. They must be exhausted.)
