Thirty

*the day of the test*

Sophie pov

I didn't sleep at all. I hadn't for 3 days. I was dizzy and my head was spinning. But I washed my face and I was better. I didn't have time for breakfast so I convinced dad with orange juice. He was dropping me off at school today. Soon, we reached the school, and first-class was maths. We all were sitting at our desks. Mr. Bradford was leaning on his desk which was in the middle front of the room.

"Kids, I want you to do your best don't stress you have studied you can do this. No cheating if I find anyone doing that your parents will be called and I will make sure that you no longer study in this school. Do the ones you know first. The test is easy if you did study."  He said. I wasn't feeling any better dad noticed that's why he dropped me. He gives us the exam paper. I read it all and kind of solved it in my mind. Like, how each question will be done. It was easy so I started writing the test. We had 1 hour for the test. 

30 minutes through the test:

"Sophie how's it?" He says coming to me.

"It's good seems easy." 

"Good, I know you've worked hard for this good luck." 

"Thank you."  He walks away. I was like feeling like shit. Soon, I came to the last answer and quickly solved it. Suddenly, it all went black. 

Parker pov

The way Sophie was today I knew she wasn't well, but I thought she was just stressed. When I was done with the test, I was keeping my pen in my pocket and I looked up and I saw sophie faint. I stood up. 

"Mr. Nelson you need to be writing the test. If you're done just sit down." 

"She fainted." 

He quickly comes to Sophie 's side and checks her breathing.

"Get the nurse. I am calling the ambulance she isn't breathing and her pulse is very low." He said. I get out of class, rush to the nurse's office, and tell the nurse everything. An ambulance soon came and there she went in it. Her dad told me that's how her mom died ambulance was the last thing she saw.  I didn't wanna lose Sophie. I just met her but she was a person nobody could lose.

"Mr. Nelson, you need to get to class. She is taken care of." Mr. Bradford says.

I go intake my books and head to my class. I couldn't do a thing. I just kept hoping that she will be just fine.

Ashton pov

I was working In the E.R. when I got a call from Sophie's school. I excused myself, going into a corner I picked the call up.

"Hello, Mr. Walker Sophie fainted in class, she is rushed to your hospital only."  Someone on the phone said.

"Alright." I say and hang up. Sophie would probably be dehydrated, and feverish cause she hasn't slept in a few days I started running about what could be happening to her in my head. I got the team ready 

"14, Sophie walker, fainted in school, dehydrated, her fever is high, and unconscious even after 2 liters of saline en route." A paramedic said.

"Let's get her on an IV and on a monitor right now. Dr. Walker, you have to step back cause you are close to the patient. "Neil says.

I stepped back. There were rules about how one can't treat family.  I was just observing them hooking Sophie up to a monitor and an IV.

Soon, she was in a room. I was sitting beside her. It had been 2 hours she wasn't up yet. I got paged I told the nurse to page me when she woke up.

Sophie pov

I wake up I am in a hospital that's for sure and a monitor is beeping. The light is too bright so I just close my eyes. I sense an IV in my hand. I panic and rip it out and blood comes oozing.

"Get me gauze and page Dr. Walker now. " The nurse says as she walks in she keeps her gloved hand where the IV was.

"It hurts." I say.

"Just wait a second." She says as she starts cleaning it with gauze.

Dad comes right in.

"What happened here, Janet?" He asked. 

"She ripped it out as she woke up." 

"I'll do it again, Can you get me a kit and fever reducers she still has a fever." 

"Right away." Janet says as she goes out to get the things.

"How are you feeling?" He asks as he puts on gloves and starts doing the same thing she did. There was a lot of blood.

"Better." I say.

Janet gets the IV kit. Dad opens it and slowly gets the things out. He ties a band on my arm

"Close your eyes now." He says I close them and feel instant pain as the needle goes in. It hurts a bit. 

"Dad, did I complete the test?" I was worried and wasn't really sure if I had done it. 

"You even put the last full stop. Now rest." He says laughing. I sigh in relief. He dims the lights and goes out. Despite the loud beeping of the monitor, I felt asleep. I was exhausted. 

Ashton pov

As I got out of the room I dimmed the lights so she could fall asleep. Taking her chart from the nurse I filled the information in. Anuj was the president now. It was just so not amazing that my brother exactly looked like my late wife and my sister and me. We all worked in the same hospital.

"Small world." I say to myself as I round up on other patients. Check all of the post-op patients and fill their charts in, spending time with the ones who were lonely or just wanted company. 

After all of that was done I went into Sophie's room. She was talking with Anuj and Emily.

"Yeah, I am feeling better now". She said as I entered the room. They all didn't notice me so i just stayed out of their sight. 

"You clearly are not, your temperature is still high." Anuj says.

"Why does that matter?" She said sarcastically. 

"It matters because you have a fever and i'm letting you go out till it goes down." I said entering the room, everyone looked at me.

"You miss need your rest. I will be back later to check in on you." Anuj says as they both walk out of the room.

Dad, i want to see Disha or Parker. She says.

I knew she wanted to see them but i couldn't let her. Her fever was still 101.2. And I didn't want her exposed to more infection.

"Sophie, you can't. It might be dangerous." 

"Dad, please." She says her eyes filling up with tears. I didn't like seeing her cry cause I said no to something. But being a dad I had to. I had to be stern and firm. 

"When your fever goes you can see them." Not now. I say. She looks at me with pleading eyes.

"No means no." I say and get out of the room.I couldn't say no to those eyes. 

"How's Sophie now?" Neil  asked.

"She is good." I say and my pager beeps. It was from the OR.

"Go." He says and I run to the lift and quickly go to the room to scrub in.

Sophie pov

I was angry. I wanted to meet them but dad said I couldn't. I wanted to get up and get out. I was getting up when a nurse came inside and pushed me back on the bed gently.

"You can't get out doctors' orders." She says.

"I want to." I say.

"You will first get your fever down." She said sternly.  I stand back up.

"I will strap you down if I have to." She says.

I didn't like the sound of that so I sat back down. I just went back to sleep as I had nothing else to do.
