The scraping of vines and breaking bricks were almost as loud as the tumultuous pounding in my chest. The indoor plants once at home in the club now shriveled. The invading species swallowed them whole, deriving the room of any color not consisting of dark green and red. Like blood dripping from an emerald.
My feet were glued to the marble. The only touch I could discern was my aunt's tense hold on my elbow. The fierce pause that began since Freya's announcement only grew more suffocating by the second.
Elijah uncrossed his arms and leaned over the table. Father ran a hand down his face.
"Well that certainly took a turn," drawled Kol. Despite the blithe tone of his voice, his stiff posture and the wide frame of his eyes implied fear.
I didn't blame him.
I was a smoking star waiting to implode, waiting to wither away until I created a suffocating black hole that would swallow the surrounding planets like I was simply sipping tea. Not to be overdramatic or anything.
You could say that I was frightened.
My breath came out in hurried huffs. I bit the inside of my cheek to stop my teeth from chattering.
"We need a new plan... and fast."
"I am aware, Niklaus. But we can't just come up with something on the spot."
"WE HAVE TO FREYA!" I jumped out of my skin from the volume of Dad's voice. He took a deep breath and apologized softly. Freya placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Look, there might be a way we can out-match her but you may not be willing," she sighed. "It involves someone who none of us are quite fond of, but if what I believe is true, she might be willing to do all of the work needed herself."
We stared at her, awaiting further explanation but never receiving it. My father's eyes narrowed at Freya. He took a step back.
"No."
"Klaus it is the only way."
"No! I will not bring that monster back into this world."
"But we have no other option-"
"You don't know what she'll do! She might just team up with Dahlia and kill us all!" He barked a laugh, "Lord knows she's dreamed about it for decades-"
"Klaus!" cried Freya, silencing his rant. "We must. Unless you have a better idea?"
She breathed in his defeated silence and crossed her arms. "Rebekah and Hope, I need you two at the cemetery with me," she directed. "Klaus, I need you to come with us in case we need protection against Dahlia. We will need at least an hour for an uninterrupted spell. Elijah, you take Purity and hide in-
"No. I'm coming with you," I state firmly, cutting her off mid-sentence and drawing the attention of the room.
"Pure, there is no way I am letting you-
"Dad, I am just as much a witch as the rest of them, I can help." He held a firm stare so I continued, "I have been trained since I was eleven years old, and over the past year I have not only studied my magic but yours," I gestured to Freya and Hope.
"With this." I reached into my enchanted tote bag and pulled out a worn-down book. I slammed it onto the table, revealing the proof of my statement: Esther's grimoire.
Rebekah stared at me in awe. Although I was fairly certain she wasn't gaping at me, but at my bag. "How did that even fit-
"Alright, you can come-" my face lit up immediately from my aunt's affirmation but she quickly cut me off, "-If you show us you are capable of a complicated spell."
