"So, what did you wanna know about Cotillion?" Erin asked. The sun shone over the land as colorful flowers swayed in the gentle breeze. Jay had his arm draped over Erin's shoulders as they walked on the bright green lawn of the school. Jay had changed back into his regular pants, tank top, and leather jacket.
"Do you think I'm ready to become a Gentleman of the Court?" He nervously asked.
Erin gave him a small, reassuring smile while hugging his waist. "I know you are. But the real question is, do you think you're ready?"
"I wanna make you and your family proud. They're still coming, right?"
"Just Melody," Erin admitted. "Mom and Dad say she's ready to attend small events on her own. Besides, Aiden's too little to attend the party, and they want to stay home with him."
Jay released a sigh, and Erin soothingly rubbed his back. "You'll be great."
"I guess," Jay muttered while sitting under the shade of an oak tree. He gently guided Erin down and she kneeled between his legs. She smiled at him as she rested her hands on his shoulders.
"Hey, you never cease to amaze me. I am proud to be your girlfriend. But I'm even prouder to call you my boyfriend. You're the most genuine person I have ever met. As long as you stay true to who you are, you'll be unstoppable," she assured while holding his face in her hands.
The muscles in his face flexed under Erin's hands as he smiled. "How do you always know the right thing to say?" he said softly.
"It's a gift," Erin replied with a cheeky shrug.
Jay chuckled and eased Erin towards him, connecting their lips. Their fingers became entangled in each other's hair as their mouths moved in sync. Jay started to guide them down to the grass with Erin on top when someone sharply cleared their throat. Erin gasped and pushed herself off of Jay, sitting up abruptly. Upon seeing Carlos awkwardly standing just at the edge of the shade, Erin let out a deep sigh of relief, her face a deep shade of crimson.
"Seriously, Carlos?" Jay asked incredulously as he sat up next to his embarrassed girlfriend.
Carlos pursed his lips and shoved his hands into his pockets. "Sorry, figured you guys wouldn't want anyone else to see."
"And you'd be right," Erin replied, lightly smacking Jay's bicep. He playfully reeled back, chuckling at Erin's angry pout. She huffed and turned back to Carlos with a friendly smile. "Thanks, Carlos. So, how'd it go with Jane?"
The white-haired boy groaned and plopped in the grass across from the couple. Dude immediately sat on his lap. "Awful! I think I was friend-zoned."
"Ouch," Jay chuckled. Erin sent Jay a look and nodded towards Carlos, telling her boyfriend to be supportive.
Jay cleared his throat and leaned forward, asking, "What exactly did she say?"
"A lot of things. I was trying to ask her to Cotillion and she kept talking about the planning and wanting to make you proud, Rin. Then she said it was great to have a friend like me."
Erin sighed and gave Carlos's hand a reassuring squeeze. "Carlos, sometimes the best relationships are born from strong friendships. Continue to get to know each other and hang out, and if the time arises, try again when you both have some time on your hands."
"Thanks, Rin."
"Of course. I mean, Jay and I didn't jump right into a relationship. A strong bond needs to have an even stronger foundation."
"And a lot of trust and ability to forgive," Jay added. "If Erin didn't have those, we wouldn't be together."
Erin and Jay shared a loving gaze, and Carlos huffed. "How can I be friends with Jane when I can't even speak to her without making a complete fool of myself?"
