Mal had arrived back at their hangout and brought her friends up to speed. They were so distraught and riddled with guilt. But none more so than Jay. Not only did he blame himself, but he was also angry that Erin's freedom didn't seem to be on the table. He wanted so badly to yell at Mal for not fighting for his girlfriend, but he knew it wasn't her fault. Uma had a score to settle with Mal, and she'd do anything to keep the upper hand. Not to mention, her vendetta against Erin's family. Erin was just another pawn in her game.
On the way back to the hangout, Mal had been worried about Jay's reaction. She had expected him to explode and demand that she go back to Uma for Erin's freedom. What she wasn't expecting was him sitting silently on the couch while Evie and Carlos played devil's advocate with one another over their predicament. She could tell that Jay was fuming, and it made her unsettled. She wanted him to yell at her and tell her that she hadn't done enough. Mal had been doing it ever since losing to Uma. But his silence was just as deafening.
Evie and Carlos were still butting heads over what they should do as Mal thought of a way she could fix this. When a thought occurred to her, she exclaimed, "Wait! You guys! Your 3D printer."
Carlos smiled, catching on to her train of thought. "A phony wand?"
"Yes!"
"In my sleep."
Playing devil's advocate once more, Evie interjected, "And the second Uma tests it, she'll know it's a fake."
"Then Erin and Ben will be goners," Jay added, speaking up for the first time since Mal left to face Uma.
Mal wasn't ready to let this idea go. It had merit. They could work with it.
As she tried to formulate a solution, Carlos said, "Well, okay, so then we just get Ben and Erin out really fast. We need some kind of diversion."
"Smoke bombs!" Mal exclaimed.
"That's perfect," Evie praised. "I'll get the chemicals I need from Lady Tremaine's place."
"That could work," Mal agreed as Evie walked closer to her.
As an afterthought, Evie added, "Oh, and sick hair, by the way. Evil Stepmom seriously stepped up her game."
"Okay, do you want to know something? Dizzy did this."
Evie was in awe. "Little Dizzy? Shut up!"
"I know. I'm, like, loving it. It's, like, a lot lighter."
"Really proud of her."
Between the situation and the unexpected, unnerving girl-talk, the boys became agitated. Standing up, Jay crossed his arms and cleared his throat, catching everyone's attention.
"Right," Mal started, refocusing. "Carlos, Jay, you guys meet us at Pirate's Bay no later than noon."
"I'm going to save Erin," Jay stated, matter-of-factly.
His friends blanched, staring at him with wide eyes. When no one argued with him, he added, "Uma clearly isn't going to let her go no matter what we do, and I am not leaving her behind. You guys stick to your plan, and once I sneak Erin out, we'll meet you at the rendezvous point."
"No, that's not an option," Evie argued.
Nodding, Mal added, "Jay, I don't know where they're holding her. You'll be going in blind. And after talking with Uma and Harry, I got the feeling that Harry is keeping a close eye on her just to get back at you."
"All the more reason for me to get her away from them as soon as possible. If Uma doesn't plan on giving her back with Ben, then she may not even be on the deck. Time's already not on our side. I need to get a head start."
