Chapter 6: The Last of the Grey Wardens

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I groaned as I opened my eyes, whoa, 'where am I' I thought to myself. I was in a bed in a small rundown room. I sat up and looked around, what happened at Ostagar? Wait where's Alistair! I sunk down on the bed, he must've been killed or he would be right beside me waiting for me to wake up.
"I see you're finally awake." I heard a confident voice say from behind me, I turned my head quickly. It was Morrigan, the witch from the wilds, I groaned. "Your injuries were great, but thanks to my mother, you have been healed, your life saved." She said walking towards me out of the doorway. I slung my feet over the side of the bed.
"How did you find me?" I asked arching an eyebrow.
"My mother found you and your friend atop of that tower." She said walking over to a pot and stirring some kind of stew.
"My friend?" I perked up.
"Yes, the idiotic one. That called me a.. What was it.. Oh! 'A sneaky witch thief'? Yes, that one." She went back to stirring her soup, "Your things are over there in that yonder chest." She pointed to a chest beside the bed.
I grabbed all my things out of it and pulled my cuirass, which had been badly damaged in the battle, over my head and left my daggers laying on the bed before dashing out the door. Alistair was sitting on the ground, plucking grass and staring out over the water.
"A-Alistair?" I said walking over to him slowly, he quickly turned around and wrapped his arms around me. I sighed contently and rested my head on his shoulder, listening to his heart beat repeatedly. I hadn't lost him. I didn't know what I would've done if I had.
"Katria." He breathed out and let go of me. "I was so worried about you, you've been out for a little longer than a day." He said, looking into my eyes and resting a hand on my shoulder.
"What happened at Ostagar." I asked him sadly.
"I'll tell you what happened." Morrigan's mother spat out as she walked over to us, "The man who was supposed to come to the armies aid after you two lit the beacon retreated, leaving everyone who was in the valley to perish." She said sharply.
"What? Why?" I asked quickly, remembering that it was Loghain who had suggested that they light the beacon as a signal for his army.
The witch shrugged, "Men's hearts hold shadows darker than any than any tainted creature." She said looking at me. I looked at Alistair who had a pained look on his face.
"Loghain is the one who even suggested using the tower as a beacon!" I said aggressively, Alistair's face turned to anger.
"It was his plan all along! He acted as if he would assist Cailen! and... Duncan." His face turned back to pain, but it was much worse. I wrapped my arms around him, holding him tightly.
"Alistair... I'm sorry." I whispered in his ear, he buried his face in my hair, which was now down and was a complete mess. "I know he was important to you." I said sadly, Alistair sighed deeply and pulled back pressing his forehead against mine.
"Loghain must pay." He said through pain and hatred.
"He will." I promised.
"If you'll allow me to talk." Flemeth suddenly intruded. "The blight is still out there," She said, "It affects me as well." she joked.
"The Grey Wardens were killed at Ostagar," Alistair said sharply.
"Not all." Flemeth snapped back, "If only you had treaties of some kind that held promises to assist in face of a blight." She said sarcastically. Alistair's head snapped up.
