"Keira. Get down here and help your father with the dishes." My foster mom yelled from the living room. I was going to correct her that the man in the kitchen is not and never will be my father but decided against it, knowing it was better if I didn't fight with her. Last time I reminded her that they weren't my real parents they took the handle off my door and didn't feed me for a week. It wasn't much different for me seeing as I barely get food anyways but i still felt like I was dying of starvation.
I hurried down the stairs and into the kitchen where Rob was cleaning the dishes. I moved to the sink to help him but he swatted my hand away.
"You dry them" He stated harshly. I grabbed a towel off of the counter and started drying the plates he had already placed on the counter. I went to put one of the plates in the cabinet but my hand slipped and I dropped the plate on the ground, causing it to shatter.
"Dammit girl, look at what you did. I ask you for help and you go around breaking my things. This is my house not yours and it never will be-" He was cut off by the phone ringing. "You stay here and clean up this mess." he pointed to the shattered plate on the ground before going to grab the phone. I started picking up the pieces of glass, careful not to cut myself, and started throwing them in the trash.
"Little girl. It's for you" Rob held the phone out to me.
"I have a name you know." I was sick of him calling me "girl" all the time.
"Not to me you don't." He dropped the phone in my hand and left to clean up the rest of the plate I had dropped.
"Hello?" I never got phone calls and I was concerned on what was bad enough that one might be for me.
"Keira?" an unfamiliar voice said on the other end of the line.
"That's me. Who is this?"
"It's Two-.. It's Keith, your brother." I dropped the phone, letting it hang by the cord before I quickly grabbed it again.
"Keith? Why are you- how did you find me" I was confused to say the least but I was also happy. I hadn't heard from Keith in so long and it felt good to know he still remembered me. Sometimes I felt like no one did.
" It's a long story, we can talk about that later. I uh... I have a question for you."
"Shoot"
"Do you want to come live with me in Tulsa. I finally have a job and some money and you can come and live with me and aunt Layla. We have an extra room here and everything."
My heart started beating hard in my chest. I could leave Mary and Rob behind and live with my brother. I wouldn't have to worry about if I was going to get to eat or what chores I might have forgotten while they were out. Most importantly, I would have a family, one that I was actually related to.
"Are you sure. I don't want to intrude where I'm not wanted or anything."
"Keira, do you think I would call you and ask you to come live with me if we didn't want you?"
"I guess not. Ok, I'll go. When will you be here." I wanted to get out of here as fast as I could.
"I can make it there by noon tomorrow. Unless you want more time I under-"I cut him off.
"No, no tomorrow would be great. I guess I should go so I can pack my stuff."
"Great. I'll be there." I was about to ask if he knew the address but he hung up before I got the chance. I guess we'll see if he shows up tomorrow.
I tried sneaking back upstairs before they asked questions but Mary caught me.
"What did they want?" I knew I couldn't tell her who actually called. She would make sure I couldn't leave.
"The principal. She said there was a problem with my information in the system. Needed to know my birthday." She looked like she didn't believe me but she didn't do anything about it. She just sent me to my room where I stuffed everything I owned into one small suitcase and got ready for bed, willing for tomorrow to come faster.
