Keith led me down the road with all the other guys behind us. The further we went, the smaller and more beaten up the houses got. I was replaying the fight in my head.
"You sure dress like a greaser but you're much too pretty for that, don't you think Bob?" The guy with the brown hair said
Greaser? What did that mean? I'd have to ask Keith once we got a chance to sit down together.
I pocketed the switchblade from earlier. It was a nice looking blade. The handle had a skull and flowers on it and the blade looked almost brand new except for a small spot of blood on the top corner. I made a mental note to wash it once we got back home.
It soon occurred to me that we weren't going home yet. And might I remind you that I don't even know what this "home" looks like. It could be a tent in a parking lot for all I knew.
Keith was leading me to the Curtis' house. I didn't have a problem with it other than the fact that I was tired and I knew being in a house with a ton of loud ass boys wasn't going to help that at all. We reached the Curtis' and everyone went to their "unofficially assigned" spots on the couch as Keith liked to call it. I didn't have a spot yet so I sat on the edge of the counter. My head was pounding from all the noise in the house and after a while it got to be too much.
I headed over to Darry who was reading the newspaper. He hadn't noticed me so I awkwardly cleared my throat and he looked up at me.
"Hey Keira. Can I get you something?" He gave me that fatherly smile that I'd waited my entire life to see.
"Um... I just wanted to ask if you guys had any Tylenol. I have a pretty bad headache."
He stood up out of his chair and put his newspaper down.
"Come on. I'll get you some Tylenol and a water. Do you want me to see if one of the boys can walk you home? I'm sure two bit will be here for a while." He walked me into the bathroom and rummaged through the medicine cabinet before passing me two small white pills and heading towards the kitchen.
"Well I wouldn't want to bother anyone. They all seem like they're having a lot of fun. Besides I'm sure it'll go away within a few hours." He passed me a water bottle and gave me the look that says "you really should listen to what I'm saying" without actually saying it.
"Come on. I'm sure soda would be willing to walk you home. He knows where y'all live." I followed behind Darry as he walked back out into the living room and pulled soda away from cheering on Ponyboy and Johnny's arm wrestling match. I couldn't hear the conversation but Darry kept pointing at me and soda was nodding in agreement. They finished talking and Darry walked back over to me.
"Soda's gon take you home. If you need anything call this number. Someone's always home and the door's always open." He handed me a piece of paper with an address and a phone number on it. I thanked him and followed Soda out the door. I was going to stop and tell Keith I was leaving but Darry assured me that he had it covered.
Soda and I walked in silence for a while, me counting the number of steps I took for each section of the sidewalk. I lost count on the 45th section and decided to give up. I looked up at the sky and stopped in my tracks. There were stars. Where I lived we didn't have many stars from all of the light pollution. Soda kept walking a few steps before stopping and turning around to give me a questioning look.
"Hey.. do you think we could just stay here for just a second... I just... I've never seen this many stars before." I kept my eyes towards the sky while still talking to Soda. He chuckled a little and moved over to sit on a bench near the sidewalk we were walking on. I laid down on the other side of the bench and bent my knees up so I wouldn't kick Soda but he moved my legs on top of his to make it more comfortable.
We stayed there for a bit, Soda pointed out the few constellations he knew (the big and Little Dipper. He could point Orion's Belt but not the rest of him) I showed him some of the ones I knew and it was clear I knew a lot more than him. Despite only ever seeing maybe 40 stars in my lifetime I kept a book of constellations beside my bed and I would pretend to map the stars on my ceiling while Mary and Rob were asleep. I knew what each constellation looked like without ever even seeing them in real life and now that I was here, I could see each one clearly.
I knew I probably had the stupidest grin on my face but I couldn't help myself and when I looked over at Soda he was smiling back at me, not the stars. I turned back to the stars and felt a light blush form on my cheeks. We laid there until I almost fell asleep and Soda decided it was time to head the rest of the way home.
And as we walked, the stars shone down on me like I'd always dreamed they would.

I'm kind of proud of this chapter. It's taken a while for me to gain motivation to write again but there should be more updates in the upcoming weeks.
I relate a lot to Keira. We both love the moon and the stars.
