Later that night Two Bit asked if I wanted to go to the Curtis'. I got dressed in some jeans and a white T-Shirt, throwing Soda's flannel on top of it. I was going to wear this flannel every day until it didn't smell like him anymore.
I decided to bring some brownies over that I had made earlier. Two kept asking if they were "special" brownies and I banned him from eating any of them. He was quick to apologize and steal one off of the plate.
We got to the Curtis' and I headed to the kitchen to put the brownies down. Darry was standing at the stove cooking some pasta.
"Hey Dar, need any help?" I asked. He turned around and pulled me into a quick hug before going back to the pasta.
"Could you pull the garlic bread out of the oven and make sure it's done?" I opened the oven and pulled the bread out. It looked like it was done so I put the pan on the counter and started to move the pieces to a plate.
I finished putting the last piece on the plate when I felt arms wrap around my waist.
"Two told me he was fine with us dating." He sounded like a kid who just got a puppy for Christmas, he was so happy. I smiled as I put the bread on the table next to the pasta.
"Yep. Talked to me about it this morning. Did he yell Ki-pop in your ear too?"
"Ki-pop?" He asked. My eyes widened.
"Oh god. You haven't been traumatized yet. Just wait. He'll start screaming it in a few minutes, probably get Steve in on it too." I walked over to the living room and started rounding up the boys for dinner.
"Wait, what is it? What does that mean?" I laughed at how confused he was getting. I turned and patted him on the shoulder.
"Trust me, you'll see."
"Ki-pop! Get over here!" Steve yelled from where he and the other guys were sitting around the table.
"And it's started." We both walked over to the table, Soda still very confused. I sat down in between my brother and Soda, Two wiggling his eyebrows at me. I shoved his shoulder and fixed my focus on the table instead.
I let the boys get their food first before putting some pasta and a piece of bread on my plate.
We spent dinner laughing and joking like always. It felt nice. I had had more family dinners in the past few days than I had in my entire life. At one point Soda tried putting his hand on my leg, right above my knee but Two saw and smacked his hand away, glaring at him over my head. I had to stop myself from choking on my pasta at the look on Soda's face.
After dinner everyone went their separate ways. Dally and Two-Bit went to go cause trouble that I'd probably have to clean up in the morning, Johnny and Pony went back to Pony's room, Darry sat on the porch with the newspaper and Steve was sitting in the living room watching some movie on the TV. Soda and I sat on the couch with Steve for a bit until Steve had yelled Ki-pop too many times and we decided to go for a walk instead.
I had to explain to Soda why everyone was yelling Ki-pop at us. At some point during dinner Johnny and Pony had gotten in on it as well. We walked by the park and I suggested we sit on the swings.
I sat on one and instead of sitting next to me, Soda stood behind me, gently pushing me on the swing.
"I think I can see the Big Dipper." He pointed to the sky and I looked up.
"That's the Little Dipper. The Big Dipper," I grabbed his hand and moved it a bit to the right "is right there." He kissed the top of my hand
"See, this is why I need you. How else would I know which dipper I'm pointing at?" I laughed and leaned my head back onto his stomach, smiling up at him. We sat like that for a bit, smiling at each other, before we heard the familiar rumbling of a mustang pulling up at the curb.
I stood up and Soda came to stand next to me. I put my hand on my back pocket where the switchblade from the other day sat. I had cleaned it up and Two made sure I never left the house without it.
Two guys got out of the mustang. Neither of them looked very dangerous and they were both drunk so I relaxed a bit. If they tried anything they wouldn't get far. I tensed up again when I saw three more guys get out of the back seat, all of them bigger than the two before and definitely not as drunk. Two, we could handle, five and we were way outnumbered in bodies and ability.
I started backing away slowly, hoping that if I hit the edge of the playground I could sprint back to the Curtis' house but one of the guys from the back noticed me and picked up his pace. Soda stood in front of me but the other two from the back pounced on him, knocking him to the ground. Soda was strong but he didn't carry around a blade and I could tell these guys weren't about to quit because of some muscle. I pulled out my blade and flicked it open.
I stood facing the two guys from the front and the one from the back, my blade held out in front of me. Every step they took toward me, I took one back. Soda was gaining on the two from before but he wasn't completely out of their grasp yet. I thought I could get far enough away from the guys advancing on me but I felt my back hit against something hard and realized I was cornered against a brick wall. There wasn't enough space to get out on either side and all three guys were close enough that I could smell the alcohol on their breath.
Soda had gotten the two guys off of him and he was running toward me but the bigger guy had me pinned against the wall by the wrists and the smaller ones were guarding Soda from getting to him. I couldn't move my wrists to use my switchblade due to his tight grip on them and I was as far back against the wall as I could be. He kept inching his face closer and I knew how this would end if I didn't do anything.
Soda had made it to the two smaller guys and if I could get the guy off of me we could make a run for it. I waited until soda had one of them pinned on the ground and I slammed my knee up in between the bigger guys legs. He fell to the ground groaning in pain and I shook the pain out of my wrists. I grabbed the guy soda didn't have pinned and pushed him back into the wall I had been pinned against. His head hit the wall with a satisfying thud and he fall to the ground too, cradling his head.
Soda took this as a signal to get up and we both took off running back to the Curtis' house.
