  a year went by after the last argument between tony and y/n. she left the team but continued to stay in contact with a few of her teammates. steve had a plan to get the duo back together but he knew he needed assistance.

y/n's phone rang, waking her from her nap, "hello?"

"good morning, sunshine." steve's cheery voice chimed through the phone.

"you know i'm home right? you could've just came into my room if you wanted to talk to me."

"we'll i'm not home, doll. i actually was calling to ask if you wanted to meet me at the diner down the street?" steve asked, hoping she would say yes.

"sure. i'm starving. let me get ready and i'll be there in thirty minutes." y/n hung up and quickly began making herself look presentable to the public.

after y/n ended the call, steve immediately dialed tony's number to hear it ring once and tony picked up.

"what's up, capsicle?"

"hello, stark. do you wanna grab a bite to eat and go over our next mission?"

"yeah, why not? send me the address and i will get there soon. order me a whiskey will ya?" tony chuckled and the line went dead.

steve smiled to himself and left the restaurant. part one of his plan worked, and he hoped the next few ideas would come to fruition.

after awhile, y/n and tony arrived at the same time. y/n didn't notice tony's presence and took a seat in an empty booth.

"hey, is this seat taken?" y/n's heart dropped as the familiar voice spoke. she knew that tone anywhere.

she slowly lifted her head and met the eyes of tony stark. his jaw dropped as the girl in front of him gazed in shock.

"what are you doing here?" she snarled.

tony whistled, "still mad, are we?"

y/n stayed quiet, "i'm going to take the silence as a yes then," tony said into the booth, "and if you must know, i was here to meet the grandpa."

"i was here to meet steve too."

the pair huffed in realization. steve was going to get his ass kicked if this chat didn't go well between the duo.

"since we're here, we might as well catch up, right?" tony suggested as he looked over the menu.

"i guess so," she took a sip of her water and continued, "how've you been, stark?"

the old flames caught up for hours. they talked about life, work, and how y/n's old teammates talked about her all the time.

"so, is there a special someone in your life?" tony pressed.

y/n smiled to herself at the thought of her current boyfriend, "there is. his name is jake."

"jake from state farm?"

y/n let out a hearty laugh at tony's stupidity, "no, no. i met him at the park and we've been together for a couple months now."

tony tried to hide his misery with a smile, "well, i'm having a party this weekend. why don't you and jakey boy come?"

"i'll think about it," y/n checked her watch, "i have to get going."

she stood up and handed tony some money, "i'll see you later, stark."

tony had a plan. invite y/n, confess his love, and pick up where they left off. he thought the plan would be foolproof but after seeing how y/n smiled at the mention of her boyfriend, tony was only fifty percent sure it would work.

the weekend came faster than expected. before y/n knew it, she was walking into the stark tower, hand in hand with jake. nerves filled her body as the elevator shot up the the designated floor.

y/n knew she looked good, but who was she trying to impress? certainly not jake.

the doors slid open to reveal a large party with people dancing, drinking, and talking. hundreds of sweaty bodies filled the massive room. jake and y/n found the bar and ordered themselves drinks.

y/n chugged down her drink for confidence. she felt a tap on her shoulder and whipped around, too quickly.

"y/n? is that you?" tony smiled at her, looking her up and down while doing so, "you look stunning tonight."

"thank you, tony. by the way, this is jake."

"jake from state farm! i've heard great things about you!" tony mocked, "can i steal your girl for a quick dance, bud?"

jake gave tony a kind smile and nodded to the question. he placed a quick kiss to y/n's cheek and excused himself to the bar.

tony held his hand out for y/n to take which she hesitantly did. she followed him to the dance floor and glanced around to make sure no one was staring at the pair.

a slow song started playing as couples filled the dance floor. tony snaked his arms around his ex and started dancing.

"you look happy with him." tony started, breaking the silence.

y/n sighed, "yeah, he's very sweet."

"i'm sensing a 'but' coming next."

y/n sadly chuckled, "but he's not you."

tony couldn't breathe. the love of his life just confirmed she wasn't over him. he was hesitant to make a move but did anyway.

the ex lovers slowly leaned in to each other and shared a passionate kiss. sparks flew as the pair finally reunited.

realization kicked in and y/n pulled away from tony, "i have to go."

she ran from the dance floor, shoving couples out of her way. she found jake at the bar with a drink in hand. y/n watched as he led his hands up and down a blonde's body.

another cheater? she couldn't believe it. she questioned why this situation kept happening to her.

she found her way to the balcony and huffed when she reached the railing. the emotions set in and she started crying. why did she fall in love with the wrong guys?

"are you okay, y/n."

not him. not now. the last person she wanted to see was him.

"go away, tony."

"no," he disobeyed and turned y/n to look him in the eyes, "you need to understand how sorry i am for what i did to you."

"i don't w-"

"just listen," tony said, cutting her off, "i love you. i always have. what i did to you is unforgivable, but i promise i will never let that happen again. i've changed for you. i've cleaned up my act to get you back. but, if you still want to walk away, that's okay too."

"you're right. what you did is unforgivable but, i'm willing to forgive you."

tony's eyes lit up, "y-you are?"

"of course. i never stopped loving you and i'm willing to give us another try if you will."

tony answered by kissing y/n. enough was said in that shared moment. the troubles that they went through were all forgotten. jake was a distant memory now. the only thing that mattered to y/n was having tony back.

finally, a happy ending for the duo.
