flashback

Meredith Grey stared at her new shoes as she walked down the street, her nanny watching her from close behind. She didn't usually look at her feet when she walked places but she really liked her new shoes. They were pink and pretty and she couldn't wait to show Sophie her new shoes. Sophie would love her new shoes too. Which is why she had to go to Sophie's.

She had wanted these shoes forever, ever since Sophie had come to school with red ones just like them. And Sophie had said there were pink ones and blue ones and green ones too. So Meredith had gone home and begged and begged Mommy for them, because it was almost her birthday. And finally, Mommy must have listened because now she was wearing pretty pink shoes.

Sophie would be happy. Sophie liked when they dressed the same. She said it made them like sisters, but cooler than sisters because sisters were really annoying. And if anyone knew anything about sisters it was Sophie. She had lots of them. But now she had shoes like Sophie's so they could be sisters or like sisters. Kind of sisters since they were pink instead of red.

So she definitely had to show Sophie her new pink shoes. And see if Sophie could play. It was a weekend and it was summer, so Sophie should be able to play. She hoped she could because they hadn't played since before Meredith had gotten her new shoes, and before Sophie's daddy had gone to the hospital. Sophie's daddy went to the hospital a lot, and not cause he was working like Mommy.

Sophie's daddy got sick a lot. Which was pretty sad. Because it meant sometimes Sophie was pretty sad and she couldn't play with her. And because Sophie's dad was really cool when he wasn't sick. He played with them lots and lots and he was really really nice. So him being sick was sad. But Meredith's mommy had said he was feeling better now so they might be able to play.

She ran up to the door quickly, making sure not to step on any puddles or cracks and rang the doorbell, grinning as the door opened. "Hi, Mrs. Shepherd!" she chirped as Sophie's mommy walked onto the porch.

"Meredith, good to see you," Sophie's mom smiled widely.

"Can Sophie play today?"

"Of course she can," she nodded, smiling softly at her.

"Good! Cause I got new shoes and I want to show her!"

"New shoes?" Mrs. Shepherd asked, her eyes wide. "Let me see."

"They're pink!" Meredith exclaimed as she lifted up her foot.

"Those are very pretty, Meredith."

"They're like Sophie's but she has red and I have pink."

"Of course," Mrs. Shepherd nodded. "Twins like always."

"Meredith!" Sophie exclaimed as she came running to the door, her really curly hair falling out of her ponytail.

"Sophie!" Meredith grinned. "I got new shoes!"

"You did!" Sophie grinned. "Let me see! Let me see!"

"They're just like yours," Meredith smiled proudly.

"They are!" Sophie nodded. "But yours are pink. I really really wanted the pink ones but Emily said I should get red. Derbear says she wanted the pink ones but they didn't have ones for her."

"Now I have the pink ones so it's good you got the red ones."

"Yeah it is or else we'd be twinkies and you heard what Amber at school said about twinkies."
