It was cold. It was definitely a cold night, and Meredith was pretty sure she would notice the cold night if it weren't for Derek's arms wrapped tightly around her, a blanket draped over their bodies. After two days of feeling like death, she was finally better, finally well enough to be outside for a bonfire. Of course, she was feeling better, but Derek wasn't taking any chances.
When Sophie and Brian had decided they needed to have a bonfire, Derek had decided she wasn't allowed to leave the house until she put on one of his sweaters. And now he was holding her a little too close with a blanket over them, and she was pretty sure she wouldn't feel any cold if she tried. She was toasty and comfy and even if her boyfriend was a little insane, she didn't really had any complaints.
She curled closer to him as he pressed a kiss to her neck. This was amazing. She wasn't used to being this close to someone. She wasn't used to spending this much time with someone, being around someone this much, but she liked it. She had thought she'd be crazy by this point, completely crazy, but instead she wanted to be around him all the time.
He was fun. He made her laugh and he made her feel really good. She wanted to be around him. And she wanted to tell him things that she hadn't actually told anyone but Sophie. But she found herself wanting to tell him. Because he would get it. He always did. And he would hug her and suddenly everything would feel better. He had a way of making things feel better. It was a good thing.
"Okay, who wants smores?" Brian asked as he moved Sophie carefully out of his arms, giving her a quick kiss.
"I definitely want one," Derek nodded. "Mer?"
"Definitely," Meredith giggled as she wiggled to try to get closer to him. She loved how she felt when he had his arms around her, which sounded cheesy even in her head, but it was true. She liked the feeling of being safe.
"Make my girlfriend's smore first, Bri," Derek grinned, squeezing her tightly.
"How is that even fair?" Mark frowned from where he was sitting with Callie.
"Mer's been sick," Derek shrugged.
"She had a cold," Mark rolled his eyes and then winced as Callie elbowed him in the ribs. "Hey! What was that for?"
"Be nice. Derek's being sweet," Callie sighed. "You could learn from him."
"You have complaints?" Mark raised an eyebrow.
"Well you're not exactly sweet."
"You want sweet?"
"Sweet can be good sometimes."
"So you want Bri to make your smore first?"
"No, he's making Mer's smore first. I would like him to make mine before he makes yours."
"I wasn't actually offering to make anyone's smores," Brian laughed, handing Meredith a stick with a marshmallow.
"Oh really?" Derek asked. "Because we had that conversation a few days ago..."
"I could make Mer's smore," Brian nodded quickly.
"That's what I thought."
"What's going on?" Meredith whispered to Derek as Brian took her marshmallow away from her.
"He wants to marry Soph," Derek whispered back. "I'm making him work for it."
"Seriously?" Meredith breathed, watching Sophie giggle next to Brian.
"Seriously," Derek nodded. "It's insane."
"But they've only...it's only been a month and a half."
