you're not five

After what felt like hours of crying and sobbing, Meg was finally making some sense. She did her best to explain what had happened and why she had been kicked out of her house. Gus kept the girl in his embrace, rubbing her arms in a comforting manner, reminding her that she was always welcome at the crib and even offering to give up his bedroom for her.

"I'll just crash on the couch until I figure something out," Meg assured, knowing that her presence will be a bit of an inconvenience for everybody. "Or I'll fix myself a mattress in Wiggy's room."

"We'll figure something out later, aight? Have you eaten anything today?" Even though Gustav didn't spend lots of time with the redhead, he noticed her rather unhealthy eating habits - either forgetting or purposefully avoiding meals, he wasn't sure.

"I had a muffin for lunch."

"It's almost 6PM."

She just shrugged. So maybe it was purposeful.

"Alright, come on," Peep stood up, dragging the girl with him. Meg whined pathetically, not wanting to move from the couch. She was sad now, there would be time for other crap later. "We'll fix ourselves some dinner, boo, how does that sound?"

"Exhausting," the way she scrunched her nose made Gus smile slightly. How could she be so cute? "Let's get it over with."

Getting it over with took way longer than expected. After closely inspecting every possible cabinet and the entirety of the fridge, the two had to go shopping for some food that wasn't cereal.

The decision of taking Meg's car and driving to the supermarket was made and so they both got into the vehicle and drove off, Gus successfully distracting Margaret's intrusive thoughts with some random small talk.

The drive wasn't long, but thanks to traffic it was way longer than it should be. The store was weirdly crowded, maybe because people were shopping on their way home from work. Maybe most of them, just like Gus and Meg, realized they had nothing to eat and had do do some last minute shopping.

"Aight, what do you wanna eat?" Peep asked turning left into a random aisle, Meg closely behind him. She sighed dramatically and looked around.

"I don't know," she whined like a literal toddler. "Nothing looks good."

"You're not five, boo," Gus snickered. "Just pick something."

After way too much time the redhead settled with some frozen chicken nuggets and french fries that they could just throw into the oven. After Margaret's choice of food Gus doubted his expression that she wasn't five, but the bottle of wine that she picked up because "she totally deserves it, right?" assured him that he was not in fact babysitting a toddler, just a very picky twenty-year-old.

Their way back home took less time and after barely half an hour they sat down and ate their meal straight out of the kid's menu.

"Is Wiggy coming home tonight?" Meg was sipping her wine while Gus got himself some beer from the kitchen.

"I don't even know. We didn't talk much today."

"You two don't talk much at all lately. What is up with that?" Just by Gustav's reaction, the girl knew something was indeed up.

"I dunno what you're talking about," he shrugged, knowing damn well that Meg was able to see right through his lies.

"You know you can talk to me, right?" Her tone was calming, assuring, genuine. Gus knew how much pressure would be lifted off his shoulders if he decided to admit his feelings. But then again, what feelings exactly? And worse, what if they weren't mutual?

"I know, boo, thanks." Margaret wasn't sure what she was expecting, but she sure was hoping for something. Maybe an explanation for the fights with Wiggy or avoiding both her and Nate.

"Anytime." Saying that she wasn't disappointed would be a lie. A huge one. She hoped for things to be resolved, she needed to know something for sure. She needed to know that she wasn't stupid and naive to have feelings for Gus. Because she did and she knew that much, despite not being sure of what said feelings were - was she in love? Did she have a crush? Did she love him? No, love was too big of a word. Too serious, way too serious.

"Are you okay?" The sudden question snapped Margaret back to reality.

"Huh? Yeah, I'm fine, I was just thinking..." The redhead mumbled, playing with her fingers. "Let's go for a smoke, okay?"

"Sure, come on." The boy extended his hand towards Meg, which she took without hesitation. He liked that she didn't pause even for a second, just trustingly allowed him to connect their fingers.

"Bub?" Margaret knew she could be risking a lot with the question she was about to ask, but she needed to know.

"What's up?"

"Are you jealous of Wiggy and I?" Gus froze with his hand halfway up, since he was about to put his cigarette into his mouth.

"What?"

"Nate once told me that you were jealous, after you two got into a fight when he had my phone, remember? So, please, just tell me the truth, Gus." The girl looked at Peep's face, really hoping to get an honest answer.

"I just don't like how close you two are..." Gustav's voice was quiet, sort of unsure.

"Nate is just my friend, I-"

"I should be the one you tickle and hug in the kitchen. I should be the one that makes you laugh or looks for our picture in your phone. It should be me, not Wiggs!" He was finally letting out the frustration that was repressed for such a long time.

Meg didn't know what to say, some part of her expected Gus to just deny him ever being jealous. Now she wasn't certain which would be better.

"Wiggy is my best friend. You... You're different."

"Different?" Gus scoffed and shook his head. "What the fuck does that even mean?"

"It means that I don't have the same kind of feeling for Nate, you dumbass! I like you, a lot! But I'm so fucking confused, because I'm not even sure what I'm feeling and I-..."

Before she had the chance to finish her rant, she was silenced with a kiss. A passionate, long-awaited kiss that neither of them wanted to end. Meg's hands cupped Gustav's face, her fingers slowly stroking his cheeks, while his hand was situated on the base of her neck.

"I like you too, boo," Peep whispered once their lips separated, both being out of breath, "a lot."
