The sound of my alarm used to be something I loved, however, I am beginning to realize how annoying it can be. I can't lie though I am excited to be back at work. My ankle is all healed up and I can finally go back to work. Just in time to make sure I can see the offices being built.
The consultancy is still opened, we've just changed the office location to the east wing of the building while the work goes on. It's been a month since the gala and everything that happened with Hunter but it seems like we both understand our boundaries. With a few texts here and there, we managed to keep up with each other without feeling like we were suffocating each other.
Don't get me wrong, I am so happy that he is back in my life, but I don't think I will ever be ready for him to be in a position in my life again where he can hurt me as he did before.
I get myself ready and have a quick smoothie for breakfast before making my way to work. Rashid dropped me off and seeing my building felt amazing after a month filled with working from home. I meet Saph by my office with two coffees ready in her hand.
She looks stunning as always.
We both work towards the construction site of the building and see all the men working on the walls and conversing about measurements. One man comes up to me and holds his hands out. "Ms. Brown, a pleasure to meet you. My name's Gary, I'm the head builder. I'll do everything I can to make sure my team and I create everything to the best of your standards."
I shake his hand and thank him for his cooperation and take any coffee orders they may like.
I make my way down the building and out the entrance. We always have a coffee truck parked outside the building, so I place my orders for the workmen and wait for them to be made. The coffee guy finally calls out my name and as I'm about to pay for the coffee, a hand appears with a 50$ bill in their hand, paying for my coffee.
I turn to look at who it is, so I can thank them, only to find it's Hunter. "Thank you, but you didn't have to do that. I could've paid." I state firmly.
"I know" he replies while placing the change in his wallet. "Why are you drinking so much coffee anyways, you always hated the taste of it back in England?"
I laugh at the thought that he remembered how much I despised coffee back in the days and that only a good cup of tea could make someone's day much better. "Well, that was before I moved to America. You need coffee to help maintain your life in the busy location of Chicago, and as for the orders, they're not for me. It's for the builders working on the construction of the new offices that you designed." I say with a huge smile on my face while doing a little 'boop' on his nose.
He scrunches his face when my index finger lands on the tip of his nose and returns a smile to me. "The offices are being made?" he questions
"Yeah, you should come and check them out seeing as you were the brains behind the idea," I reply.
He bows his head in embarrassment and gives a low chuckle. He could never take a compliment without feeling embarrassed. I don't know why, he's so talented and he knows it too. However, when he lifts his head up, his smile is quickly turned into a thin line and with what can only be described as anger throughout his whole face.
I turn around to see what he's looking at, and then I realize Zander walking towards us.
"You have got to be kidding me?" I whisper to myself. I laugh a little at the change of positions between the two men. Zander orders his coffee and then looks at me before saying "Mack."
"Zander," I reply.
I haven't heard from him since the day we met up just before I kicked him out of the apartment. It's been months. He looks rough.
I look back at Hunter who cannot take his eyes off of Zander. I place my hand on his shoulder to take him out of his trance and he looks down at me. His expression immediately softens to my touch and I give him a smile that says 'let's go'.
While we begin to walk off, Zander says "So how long after we broke up did it take for you to jump back into bed with him and ride his dick?" I stop in my path and turn around.
"What the fuck did you just say to me?" I yell back. I don't care if everyone can hear me right now, how dare he disrespect me like that!
Hunter tries to grab my arm and hold me back, but I yank my arm away from him. I see Zander hold a smug smirk over his face while I walk up to him.
"You heard me," he replies
"Okay, 1. You don't get to have an opinion about who the hell I am fucking or not and 2. Don't talk to me about 'how long' when you didn't even have the decency to break up with me while you jumped in bed with another bitch!". I didn't yell but my tone was extremely aggressive.
He scoffs at me and brings his face close to mine. It scares me a little and I show it by stepping back a small amount. "You better watch your tone with me you stupid slut."
Who is this guy? This is not the Zander I was in a relationship with. Before I can say anything, I feel Hunter pull me behind him and now he's face to face with Zander. "Talk to her like that again, in fact, you even think about talking to her in general ever again, you'll have me to deal with. Now, walk the fuck away."
He wasn't loud or too quiet but definitely threatening enough to make Zander shut the fuck up. Zander looked at me and then spat next to my feet and walked off. Hunter turned back to me and there was nothing but concern on his face when his green eyes met mine. I could not stop looking at him.
That was so fucking sexy and attractive. "You okay?" he asks sympathetically. I gulp and reply "Yeah."
We make our way back to my office. I give the coffees to Sapphire to give to the workers and walk into my office with Hunter behind me. As soon as he walks in, I lock the door. I turn around and face him and immediately crash my lips into his. I don't know if it was the way he treated the Zander situation or the way he protected me, but I needed him right now. He hesitated a little but then grabbed my face and kissed me back. It was as if he was starving for my taste. He pushed me against the door, and took charge of the kiss, while the core in between my legs began to dampen.
