After back-to-back appointments and catching up with work that I missed when my ankle was broken, I let out a loud sigh. "Finally," I whisper to myself. I let Sapph leave work early. I could just tell by the look on her face, her mind was not in the right place. I feel for her honestly. I lock my office door and say my goodbyes to the janitor, before leaving him an iced tea.
I walk out of the building and meet Rashid by the entrance. "Home, Ma'am?" he asks
I look at him and let my mind wander. "Rashid, I could do with a small treat, do you know where Moretti 'Panificio Moretti' is?" He gives me a nod, informing me that he knows where it is, and guides me into the car.
I finally arrive outside the bakery and walk-in. I look around for Mrs. Moretti and spot her behind the counter, serving a customer. "Signora Moretti?" I question. - (Mrs. Moretti)
She faces my way and a huge smile grows on her face. I walk towards her and give her a tight hug before she cups my face and places the softest of kisses on my cheek. "Mackenzie. Cosa posso portarti?" - (Mackenzie! What can I get you?)
If it were any other person, I would have corrected her, but I love the way she says my name with her thick Italian accent. "Hai dei cupcakes di velluto rosso?" - (Do you have any red velvet cupcakes?)
She gives me a warm smile and goes behind the counter and picks a small cupcake lined with a crimson cupcake casing. It's decorated with vanilla buttercream and little red fondant rose. My mouth begins to water just looking at the cupcake. I take my purse out of my bag to get some money out before I hear Mrs. Moretti say "No tesoro, è sulla casa." - (No sweetheart, it's on the house.)
I give her a warm smile and thank her for her kindness. I walk over to the small table that Hunter and I sat at when we were last here. A single bite from the cupcake, let out a moan of satisfaction from my mouth. That lady's hands need blessing. It melts as soon as my tongue hits the fluffy core and the buttercream is the perfect amount of sweetness. I wipe the excess buttercream from the corner of my mouth with my thumb.
"Enjoying that are we?" I hear a voice say. I look up to see Eric stood in front of me with a piece of cake in his hands. I let out a small laugh in embarrassment. He takes a seat in front of me. He looks at me with concern as if he's scared to ask me something. I raise an eyebrow at him and finally question "Spill, what's on your mind?"
"Is Sapphire okay, after what happened last night?"
I sigh and give him a sympathetic look. I know how deeply he cared for her, and I think a small part of him still does. "She's okay." I lie. I know she will not feel comfortable with me telling Eric about her problems and personal issues. He nods and takes a bite out of his cake. "Hey, have you spoken to Hunter?" I ask, curious as to why I haven't heard from him all day.
Eric laughs while taking a sip of his lemonade. "Who hasn't he spoken to today? He's been yelling at almost everyone so we know to keep our distance." My face fills with concern. He did mention that there was a problem at work. He must be really stressed. A dirty thought comes into my mind. Maybe, I can help relieve him of that stress. A small smirk plays on my lips. "Is he still at work?"
