Nate's POV
This would have been any other chill weekend if it weren't for the annual "let's pretend we care about our moon deity" block party... Also known as the Harvest Moon Festival. It was overrated and I hadn't looked forward to this time of the year since middle school, but I knew this year would be different seeing as Remy would make his grand appearance at both packs events.
I was still dealing with my anger, holed up at my cabin like a brooding bear in hibernation. I had spent the entirety of last week all alone, and not only had I admitted my feelings for Remy, I also turned the whole thing into an argument. My insecurities drove me over the edge of emotional poise, and I pushed Remy to cry and run from me.
I guess that's what I do best: fuck shit up.
He seemed to really like me and I just had to go and ruin that special moment, but he also liked Theo which pissed me off more than I could fathom. Deep in my heart, I wished for nothing more than for his birthday to arrive so that I could know if he was truly mine.
'Possessiveness is not becoming of you,' Ezra chimed in.
'Well, whatcha expect? I'm not a nice guy,' I spat back at him.
The gentle beast only sighed. 'You know he's struggling with a lot of things. He just found out he's not human and the council is forcing him to make such a huge decision with his life... Don't be an ass Nate. Just go talk to him.'
Ezra was always right and it was always annoying to know that. It was late into the evening, the casted shadows in my cabin room marked the last of the fading sunlight.
The Harvest Moon Festival was about to start. Maybe I should try to catch Curly there. Ugh, WTF, like he would even give me the time of day. I could just pop in to test the waters...But then I'd probably look like a mess.
The dinner banquet my mother obsessively poured her energy into was about to start soon. Rustling with decisions, I tried to make up my mind on showing face or staying cordoned off in my mountain retreat.
'It's the right thing Nate, you should go see him,' Ezra coaxed me, so I begrudgingly got up and dressed to go see the curly-haired boy of my dreams. Damn, it had been a while since we last spoke. Wonder if he was doing alright?
Tired and slightly depressed, wearing my varsity jacket with a soft black long sleeve tee and jeans, I headed out of the cabin to my truck in the gravel way. The small amount of effort I put into my hair showed as I peeked a look at myself in the driver's tiny rearview mirror.
The bags under my eyes were an obvious sign that I hadn't gotten much sleep and moreover, I knew that I was losing my cool edge in this town, but I found myself caring less about the bad-boy facade and more about Remy‒‒that purple-eyed, one-of-a-kind. He occupied a space in my mind that I simply couldn't clear no matter how hard I tried. A boy like that never comes through a town like Rosewood, and yet here he was.
The evening sun cast a golden glow as I pulled up to my pack's estate. People rushed around as they finished up the last remaining touches for the harvest festivities. Fairy lights lined the banisters leading up the stairs, and red velvety carpets perfectly hugged each step while dance music poured through the front door inviting the guests to cross the threshold. My mother seemed to be going all out this year, like this was more than just our small town's dopey excuse for a holiday.
Arriving early as I had, it was more or less farcical to watch the pack members scurry around with last-minute festival decor. Some were wrapping strings of red and white roses around the entryway pillars, pulling the red carpet into the overall ensemble. Others were meticulously placing fake votive candle centerpieces on the cocktail tables on the front patio and yard. Through the open front door, butlers were lighting real candles on the candelabras sitting atop the refectory dinner table inside. However cynical I felt about being here, it was hard not to feel the warm and inviting atmosphere.
