Behind the slow swinging door suddenly emerged a bubbly James, making himself at home as he trotted into the kitchen. A large neon green duffle bag in tow, contrasting against his bubblegum pink hair and baby blue Adidas tracksuit. The bag made a loud 'thud' as James dropped it on the floor.
"I'm sleeping over tonight," he exclaimed. "I don't care if it's Thursday!" He shook his hair, shifting his bangs into place before turning to face us.
This was going to be awkward, let's hope it goes well...
River and Haru remained still, the air sucked out of the room as we all waited for James to react. James took a few more moments, settling into the room and rambling on about his unimportant day at school. He sauntered into a stop as soon as his eyes rested on Kash and me, doe-eyed and cold sweating at the other side of the room. James' nostrils flared slightly as he cocked his head, squinting firmly into my eyes.
"Remy you're... Holy shit--wait, are you a werewolf?" James stalked in closer. "That's... so...," I dreaded the pregnant pauses he took between each word, and I gulped anxiously at the thought of James running to his gang--pack--whatever it was and sending the whole lot of them to tear me to pieces.
Fuck, send me back to a group home. I'd never met another werewolf orphan as far as I remember.
James seemed to have lost his words for a split second. "Rem," he continued at the same timid cadence, "That's so... so friggin' cool!" James quickly ran and tackled us to the floor, laughing as he embraced us with all his strength. "Why didn't you tell me? I would have helped you join our pack," he gleefully spewed. Taking control of me, River pushed the delirious teen off me and Kash.
"No fair, I want to join in too," he complained, discouraged and pouting his lips before standing still, arms akimbo, his body morphing into a wolf, the motion so quick and fluid I could barely perceive it. I watch the wolf that was James, prance around the kitchen, a sizable beast with a speckled black and brown rugged coat. His eyes melted into a dark olive green as he quickly tackled Haru again.
'What the..., can we do that too?!'
'That's a dumb question Remy, obviously we can.'
'Woah.' I was in shock of the magical transition, it was insane I had the same powers laying inside me as well.
This is some crazy shit!
Haru was upset, distressed to get off the ground, the playful wolf pinning him to the tiled floor "...Come...on James, we can't talk when you're like this." The wolf stopped its playful licking, obediently complying as it shifted back to James, who now stood naked in my kitchen.
"James, get some clothes on," River threw the tracksuit in his direction. It was still weird to see this all going down when I didn't have control. It was the most confusing sense of peace, to feel like I was both floating in the vast space in my mind and somehow present in the cramped space of the house. It was the finest line between awkward and comfortable, scared and safe, imaginary and real.
James changed into yet another athleisure fit, his demeanor a bit calmer as his eyes flashed the olive green color, matching the stoic leaves on the Rosewood pines outside. "The name's Lex," he placed his hand out for River to shake. River nodded, returning the same gesture and giving his name in tow.
