The drive out of Rosewood Creek was short. We passed endless cattle-filled pastures, and fields filled with the last remaining crops of the harvest season. The melted snow from the freak blizzard earlier this week still plastered the slippery roads, and the late afternoon sun was setting against the mountains as Theo pulled up to a large estate.
A pair of black wrought iron gates sluggishly crawled open, almost without sound. Theo hastily maneuvered his bulky muscle car through the slow moving gates, having no patience to wait for it to open fully. I tried reading a metal sign that was bolted to the gate's frame, but it was scribed in some foreign alphabet I'd never before seen, so I curiously lingered on the detailed silver engravings of a crescent moon and spindling leafy vines which adorned the border around the plate's mysterious rusting words. We followed a paved road into an expansive resort-style complex, with different intersections leading to other cabin homes and what seemed like lodge-style apartments. It was like it was a hidden miniature city: all that was missing were the local shops and the bustle of pedestrians. Theo stayed on the main thoroughfare, following it to the end of a circled enclave where we pulled up to a huge-ass mansion. I was in awe that such luxury could exist out here in this small town. A sculpted wolf spewed a modest stream of water at the center of a stately marble fountain. The limestone facade of the mansion seemed to sparkle in the fast dimming sunset.
Is Theo fucking rich!?
Theo held my hand as I carefully hobbled to the door. Onlookers watched us from afar and I hid behind Theo in embarrassment. It didn't help that I was still wearing that bright-ass baby blue tracksuit from James.
Entering the mansion was like something out of the movies; the spiral wooden staircase had intricate woven pine branches and carvings of running wolves. The chandelier was made entirely out of elk horns, the natural beauty of the foyer left my jaw agape. The extended downstairs area was outlined with warm creams and cool earth-toned interior decor. I could imagine walking in here with Beth now, a gushing nosebleed as she gawked at the ornate grandeur of it all.
We passed a lounge area with a group of people in casual conversations, sounds of small children playing down the hall reverberated through the mansion's cavern-like structure, filling the air with life. It seemed more or less impossible for me to stay nervous here. There was an almost disarming air of familial comfort to the place.
Wow... This is actually kinda nice.
Theo was leading the way through the corridor, his eyes fixed at the tall wooden doors at the end of the walkway. I could hear the shrouded gossip of passersby, people whispering and spouting their admiration of his status.
"Oh, Alpha Theo's finally back"
"Fucking splooge! He always looks so hot right after a fight."
"I know right, gosh just look at those pecs."
I could feel a heated anger flush my cheeks as I side-eyed the salacious, desperate voices. I knew it wasn't my place to get jealous, but the jealousy seemed almost a knee-jerk uncontrollable reaction.
We had reached the large doors at the end of the halls. Theo pulled on the intimidating brass handles to reveal an office, and that we were interrupting a quiet meeting between Tyrus and Alpha Leo. The scent of the oxford leather chairs cusped by the lingering musk of barrel-aged whiskey made my nostrils flare slightly. A crackling fire was the only source of heat in the room, yet Alpha Leo seemed to have to ingratiate Theo by keeping him at the door, icily staring us both down before we were allowed in to warm ourselves.
"Son," Alpha Leo spoke with seething contempt, visibly inflamed by the unplanned interruption of his meeting.
I could see the resemblance was hard to miss now. The fine and perfect symmetrical lines of Alpha's Leo face perfectly laid the blueprint for Theo's features. It was like staring into time: a more mature Theo sitting before us as a silver-fox. Alpha Leo's eyes carried the same cold sternness which was similar to Theo's rigid poker face. The apple did not really fall that far from the tree for this one.
