The heat waves that rolled into our small town indicated that summer was soon to arrive. With the dust settling after a rather traumatic spring break, we were left to pick up the pieces of our new normal.I guess you could say I was breathing easier these days since Tyrus was gone. Crazy, right? I didn't expect it either but it was under the suspicious veil of an excuse. It was all the town talked about following a rather tumultuous council meeting. Small towns—the internet was slow but the gossip was fast.
When the broadcast went off, it woke me from a deep sleep. In the early morning hours, I found myself alone, and Theo and Nate weren't by my side. A steady stream of alarms set off in my head, and dread washed over me immediately, only leading me to conclude something terrible had happened to them. Without wasting another moment, I climbed out of bed and scrambled down the stairs, running as fast as I could to make it to the great hall. In my haste, I'd forgotten my manners, unwittingly barging into a heated discussion.
"What is the meaning of this?" Theo bared his teeth, in a complete staredown with his father.
"Why did you let him leave?" He slammed his fists into the table.
Who left?
Unable to catch the beginning, I was stumped like everyone else, only able to follow along from the sidelines. The older Alpha didn't budge, ignoring his son's disrespect and remained seated.
"It is as I said before. Tyrus requested to be granted permission to track down the rogue himself. He wanted absolution, so I gave it to him." He dismissively waved Theo off before continuing.
"Why do you challenge this plan? He is going to find the rogue. Isn't that what you want??" He asked curtly, failing to understand the point of his son's anger.
"How can you assume that's what I wanted? You acted beyond your authority." Theo's voice boomed.
"You override the council here when you carry out these orders yourself." Theo spat, his brows furrowed, and his mouth twisted into a fierce scowl. It seemed as if he was doing everything to hold himself back as he paced around the room frantically.
'Woah... Tyrus is gone?!' My jaw about dropped to the floor. I was unable to resist the frenzied energy that swirled around the room. I looked over to my mates, watching them for their reaction. From their faces, you could tell they weren't happy either. Keeping poised to not reveal my shock, I stood a little taller, leaning against the back wall.
Indistinct conversations filled the large room, people slowly showing up to bear witness to the chaos before us. Nate was silent. It was a quiet anger, his eyes swirling to a deep crimson red as Ezra seemed to take over.
'Nate's upset,' River noted, alluding to his sudden disappearance.
Barely awake, it was hard to fully grasp the situation at hand, but it was as mentioned before—Tyrus was gone. Another threat was taken out without me really doing much of anything. There was slight relief there but it still made me wonder...
Why would they be upset that Tyrus is gone?
My mind lingered on the question.
'Uh-uh, why does it matter anyway? The asshole is gone. We're safe now,' River snapped at me.
The tone was a bit uncalled for, but I didn't say anything more.
The majority of the council arrived in their pajamas, groggy from their beauty sleep being interrupted.
"I can't say I'm on board with this too." Alpha Yuna yawned, the mess of rollers in her hair made her look quite ridiculous. "I agree with Theo, we needed to discuss this before Tyrus left." She sat down at the other side of the long table, grumbling slightly.
