"Casey, will you marry me?"
I sat in a silent state of shock for a moment before I finally realized that I needed to answer the question.
"Yes!" I said.
Andrew smiled and I kissed him. I'm pretty sure a good amount of people were watching us, but I really didn't care.
"I thought you'd say no." Andrew said when we pulled apart.
"Why?"
"I don't know."
"Well...yes. Definitely. I love you so much."
"Love you more"
"No I do"
"Okay"
We sat on the bench for a while longer, both silent. Not one of those weird silences, one of those silences where you may as well have been having a conversation because a lot was said without anything being said at all.
"It's getting late, we should probably head back." Andrew said after a while.
We walked back to his apartment. On the way home we decided not to interrupt any of our friends' nights, we'd tell them in the morning.
"You should tell your parents." Andrew said as he unlocked the door to the apartment.
"I will."
Not that I was looking forward to it. We both entered the apartment, Andrew heading to the kitchen to get a drink and me heading to his bedroom to change into one of the various pairs of sweatpants and t-shirts I had left there. After I was changed, I unlocked my phone and called my parents' house phone. I cringed as someone answered.
"Hello?"
"Ashley! Hey! Um, can I talk to mom and dad?"
"Which one?"
"Both."
"Ok... hold on."
I stared at the wall for two minutes before I heard my mom's voice.
"Casey?"
"Yeah, hey. Can dad hear?"
"I can hear." My dad said.
"Okay. Well you guys know that i'm dating a really great guy named Andrew."
"Yes."
"Well, now he's my fiancé."
"That's great, we're happy for you Casey." My mom said in her cold tone. No excitement whatsoever. Not that I Was expecting any.
"Um, thanks."
"Have a good night, Casey." My dad said.
"You too."
I clicked 'end call'. About 30 seconds later, my phone rang.
"Hello?" I asked. I hadn't bothered to check the caller ID.
"WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?"
Ashley.
"What do you mean?"
"What did you call about?! I just walked by with the car keys and mom and dad didn't even ASK."
"Oh, I'm engaged."
"YOU ARE?!" Ashley screeched.
I pulled the phone away from my ear for a second.
"Yes."
"THAT'S AMAZING!"
"Thanks."
"Oh my god well i'll let you go hang out with your lover."
"You're so weird, Ashley."
"I know. AH I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU."
"Again, thanks."
"I'll see you on Saturday."
"Yup. Bye."
I hung up. Wait, Saturday? Oh, right. Ashley was visiting colleges in the city with my parents. I put my phone on the side table and went out into the living room.
"Alright, you told your parents right?" Andrew asked as I sat down next to him.
"They don't care. But yeah, I did."
"Casey! They care!"
"If I were in a coma and barely striving on life support they'd say to pull the plug!"
It was true.
"Casey!"
"Andrew!"
"Let's look at optional dates for this venue. It seems nice."
