The last sentence makes literally no sense and i've been trying to word it right for a while but then i was like nah forget it so sorry

**********************************************

It was 4PM when Eli arrived to pick Rose up. Rose had put makeup on (something she only did on VERY special occasions) and even traded her usual converse for a pair of flats. I was carrying laundry to the master bedroom when I caught a bit of Eli and Rose's conversation.

"I cleaned my car especially for this"

"You what?" I asked, poking my head around the corner.

"Mom, don't get involved" Rose warned.

"But I-"

"I know"

"I love you baby. Have fun! Oh gosh I made a pun!"

"CASEY" I heard Andrew yell from the family room.

"Sorry, Andrew. Anyways, have fun you two" I said as they walked out the door.

--------------------------------------------------------------

"Remember our first date?" Andrew laughed as we walked back from getting takeout from a Thai restaurant a few blocks away.

"It depends, are we counting skating as our first date?"

"I would say it counts"

"You sucked so hard"

"I wouldn't have seemed as bad if you weren't little miss olympic gold medalist"

"Oh yeah definitely"

We continued walking, passing a small park filled with people, dogs, kids and everything in between.

"What do you think of Eli?" I finally asked, looking up at Andrew.

"Honestly, I don't think I could have picked anyone better"

"I'm glad you approve"

"And why is that?"

"I don't know. My parents never approved of the guys I dated in high school, it kind of sucked honestly. Then again, I don't think my mom would approve of anyone. Not even prince charming himself."

Just then, my phone rang.

"Speak of the bitch" I said, looking at the caller ID. "Hello?"

"Casey"

"Dad?"

"Yeah"

"What's up? Why are you calling from mom's phone?"

"I have to tell you something"

"You lost your phone?"

"No, your mother passed away this morning."

I stopped walking.

"What?"

"Paige had breast cancer and it was too late to do anything. They gave her a month to live about 2 weeks ago and well..."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"She didn't want to see you or your sister"

I was on the brink of being physically sick by the fact that even on her own death bed, my mother didn't want to say goodbye to her own daughters.

"I'm sorry" My dad said.

"It's not your fault... are you ok?"

"I'll be fine. The viewing and burial are both on Monday, if you can't make it don't worry about it"

"I'll get there. Do you need anything?"

"No, thank you"

"I'm really sorry, dad"

"It's okay. I have to tell Ashley now, wish me luck"

I laughed a little.

"Good luck Dad. I love you"

"I love you too"

I hung up.

"What's up?" Andrew asked.

"My mom's dead"

Andrew's face turned quickly to shock, then to sympathy.

"I'm so sorry" He said, pulling me into a hug.

"It's fine. Really, it's fine. I promise"

We kept on walking.

-----------------------------------------------------------

"I think Rose is home" Andrew said, addressing the faint voices clearly coming from behind our front door.

"I'll go check"

"No don't-"

But it was too late. I had already opened the door to reveal Rose and Eli, lips nearly pressed together.

"OH HELLO THERE I mean hi there Eli I see you two had a nice time"

"MOM" Rose's face turned bright red.

"Hello Mrs. Dost" Eli laughed.

"Did I interrupt something?"

"HONEY I LOVE YOU BUT YOU'RE A DUMBASS" Andrew called from the living room.

"Oh God did Dad see that?" Rose asked in horror.

"It was implied but dad is ok with that. Just no insertion" Andrew said, walking up behind me.

"DAD"

"Mr. Dost"

"Casey"

"CASEY SHUT THE FUCK UP"

"MOM. DAD. GOODBYE"

And with that, Rose quite literally slammed the door in our faces. Andrew and I both laughed as we walked back to the living room.

"How was it?" I asked when Rose came back in.

"Great! Until I got home"

"I'm sorry honey"

"It's alright" Rose shrugged and smiled a bit, walking to her room.

"Should we tell her?" Andrew asked as we heard her door shut.

"Tell her what?"

"That her grandmother passed on?"

"I guess"

Rose didn't really mind any more than I did. We drove down to Pennsylvania the following day to help my dad with funeral arrangements, and attended the funeral the day after. Nobody was sad. It was the first relatively pleasant funeral I had ever attended. After the burial, my dad took Rose, Andrew, Ashley and I to the diner a town over for pancakes. The conversation topic was focused on the the same thing as always at that crowded booth, everything except my mother.
