"Exactly, why and how did she pass that exam?"
"You ask me like I know." He replied trying to keep his demeanor blank and not showing any emotion.
"Shaurya..." Yuvraj was quick to smell a rat. "You were meant to ensure she didn't. So..why did she?" He tried to keep his cool while he spoke. He trusted Shaurya yet felt that he was being entirely truthful about the situation at hand.
"Mehek is a smart girl so you can't expect her to fall prey to all your attacks. It's simple, try something different." Shaurya, although trying his best to maintain his composure was very much confused.
Mehek was his friend, meaning she was not to have a place in his life even close to his father. Yet he has placed her so high that he was confused on whose side to be on.
"Shaurya.." Yuvraj called again and turned completely to face Shaurya who was sitting on the other chair next to his.
By his tone, Shaurya already knew whatever he intended to say was, he was damn serious about it, "I no longer wish for you to pursue your friendship with Mehek."
"What?" The initial shock drained the color out of his face. He quickly composed sensing his dad's confusion. He was meant to be acting, yet it wasn't that way, he valued her and knew she was special. He wasn't intending on letting go that easily.
"No, dad. What are you saying?"
"It is only normal that you're getting attached to her, however it is detrimental to me." He was firm.
He easily guessed that Shaurya and Mehek would get closer and the last thing he would want was for Shaurya to turn away from him. And even worse take the side of someone he has considered a rival.
"I'm not getting attached to Mehek, it's the other way around. Wasn't that the whole plan? I can't back out now I know I'm so close to earning her trust." He knew it was wrong to remain close to her as it would only escalate his confusion and turmoil. But he didn't wish to detach from her.
He was getting attached, contrary to their original plan, he was also falling prey to his own trap. But still being at her side was a nice feeling, one that he wasn't going to give up for anything.
"If you say so. Just don't fall for her."
***********
Days easily multiplied to weeks. Nightly visits from Shaurya became more regular but she didn't mind. They spent almost every single time together as much as they could.
She hadn't expected herself to be that close to anyone. She never let anyone in, but with Shaurya, she didn't mind even if he had to bother her every single time.
She was getting too attached to his company but she didn't mind. Neither did he obviously.
A lot of time had passed away.
"What are you thinking about?" The question pulled Mehek out of her train of thoughts.
"It's nothing..." She nodded in negation, trying to avoid the question. "I know you're missing Shaurya." Swati tightened her grip on Mehek's hand as they walked.
"Don't make me regret coming here with you." She turned the tables, not wanting to be at the receiving end of Swati's unending teasing.
"It was enough that I could barely sleep last night." She mumbled the last part incoherently.
Swati laughed softly, "Don't worry, we'll go back to Delhi today. And then you and my brother-in-law can romance all you want."
"We don't romance. I have told you countless times that we're just friends." She reiterated freeing her hand from Swati's tight grip.
