It was as if the air was taken away when I saw him. He was laying there, looking lifeless. He had needles in his arms, and some monitors placed around him. I walked slowly into the room, scared to look or touch. Hunters head slightly moved to his left, opening his eyes from his light rest. He slowly moved his lips into a smirk. I wrapped my left arm around my stomach, and my right hand over my mouth. He tried to move up, but clenched his eyes shut. He slouched back into his position. He lifted his left arm, the one that had all the needles and bands wrapped around. He moved his fingers, telling me to come over. I walked over to his bed, moving the wires behind me, as I sat on the bed next to him, his arms around my shoulder. I rested my head on his shoulder, letting little tears come from eyes. His right hand came to my cheek, tucking a strand of loose hair behind my ear.
"Isabelle." he barley whispered. I let out more tears, happy to hear his voice say my name. "I love you." he said. His hand rested on my cheek, his finger wiping away some tears as they fell. His touch was warm on my face, send warmth throughout my body. I smiled light, closing my eyes.
The way he couldn't say what he wanted broke my heart. He moved his hand away from my cheek. I slowly moved my head out of the crook of his neck. He was feeling the sharp pain. He clicked the button next to his bed, wanting a nurse. He took slow breaths, closing his eyes. I could tell something was wrong. I looked at the door way, Sam was standing their. I quickly shuffled to his open arms. I hugged him, as a nurse with red curly hair walked in. I let go of the hug, watching her.
"Yes Hunter?" she asked him. He didn't open his eyes, he just moved his right hand. He pointed to his heart. She nodded. "I know Hunter.. We're trying." she said. She walked over to the side of the wall and hit the bottom at the bottom of Hunter's bed. What was going on?
"Um.. Excuse me but what's.. What's going on?" I tried to ask. The nurse turned to me. She sighed.
"Dr. Lamn will explain when he gets here. I just hit the bottom to call him." she said. I nodded, walking back to Sam. Hunter laid their. He looked out of energy, not himself. He always had lots of energy with all his coffee. I quickly hugged Sam again, crying in his arms.
Dr. Lamn finally showed up a couple minutes later. He walked in and shortly nodded to me. He set his clipboard down on the counter and called me over. He walked out of the room and into the hallway. I followed. He was only a couple inches taller than me, but I felt very short. He looked down at me.
"Mrs. Hayes, I... I don't know how to explain what's wrong with your husband right now. He got lots of smoke in his lungs at the accident, and it's making it hard for Hunter to breath." I nodded. I shifted my weight from one leg to the other. I cupped my chin in my right hand, covering my mouth with my fingers. My left hand supported my elbow of my right arm. It was something Hunter did, that had grown on me. "But.. Theirs one thing... Which is why his heart hurts." he told me. I gulped. "He's having heart failure... If he doesn't get a heart transplant or major, major surgery soon.. He might leave us." he said. His words hit me like bricks.
"Ill volunteer. He can have my heart." I told him, letting my arms fall to my side. He lights chuckled.
"When I explained to Hunter, the first thing he said was 'Belles not volunteering.' So, no. You can't." he told me. I felt the tears coming.
"Then.. How.." I started to say, when Sam walked out.
"Belle, your Dads on his way." he told us. I nodded, mouthing "thank you" he nodded, walking back into the room.
"What are we gonna do." I asked him. He placed his hand on my shoulder.
"We don't know yet, but we're not losing him." he told me. I nodded, wiping a lingering tear. The doctor walked back into room, when the elevator doors opened. I looked down the hall, seeing my dad lock eyes with mine. I placed my hand over my mouth, walking to him. He had been crying, his eyes red. I hugged him, keeping him close. We cried in each others embrace. We stayed like that for a while, till releasing.
"Sam told me what's wrong with Hunter over the phone." my dad spoke. Sam must have over heard the doctor and I's conversation.
"Can you give him his note.. Hunter. Just slip it into his pocket or something." he told me, handing me an envelope. I nodded, taking it. He pulled me into another hug, kissing my head. "I love you, Belle." he told me.
"I love you too, Dad." I responded. We walked back into the room. I walked up to Hunters bed, slipping the note into my back pocket.. Because Hunter would forget it and it would get washed or something. I sat back down on Hunters bed, resting my head lightly on his chest. I heard his faint heartbeat. It wasn't matching mine. It made me sad, but I knew they'd fix it. He was light asleep. He was adorable when he was sleeping. I leaned up and kissed his cheek. I couldn't imagine him not with me. It broke my heart to even think about it.
I looked over at my dad. He was talking to the doctor. The doctors eyes widened when my dad said something. He nodded, leading my dad out of room. I wondered what was going on and wondered where they were going. My dad poked his head back into the room, blowing me a kiss, before really walking away. I leaned my head off Hunters chest. I looked over at Sam.
"What's going on?" I asked him. Sam leaned off the wall and walked over to me, sitting on the chair next to me. He took my hand, and looked me in the eyes. Worry flashed over my eyes.
"Belle." Sam spoke. I looked straight into his eyes. "Your Dad volunteered."
