Amber POV
"Crap, I forgot the mayo." I exclaim as soon as Connor and I sit down with our bags of greasy delicious food. I've been home for like four days now and I didn't realize how much I've missed this place till now. Especially this convienient chick-fil-a in the mall's food court.
"I still don't get why the heck you put mayo on a chicken sandwich." He remarks thoughtfully while biting into a fry.
"It's freakin delicious that's why." I respond and retrace my steps back to chick-fil-a to pick up a pack of mayonnaise. I don't know why but a chicken sandwich with mayo is honestly the best thing ever.
As I go up to ask one of the workers for a packet since it's way too special to just be laying out like the ketchup, the person who was previously getting some utensils at the counter turns around and knocks into me.
"I'm so sorry." The person says frantically. (Ok duh it's Hayes but just cause I know people will wonder, remember Hayes is not like totally mute and never talks so of course he's gonna say sorry to a person he bumped into.)
"No problem." I answer before looking to see the person staring at me.
It's a guy. It's a guy who has mediumish length brown hair, pretty nice muscles, and piercing bright blue eyes. I haven't seen blue eyes that bright on anyone except for-
"Hayes?" I ask hesitantly, not believing my eyes, not believing that this person is standing right in front of me. Why the hell am I still referring to him as this person, it's fucking Hayes. Yeah, that Hayes.
"Amber?" He asks in the same surprised tone his beautiful eyes crinkling in shock.
"You're back." I say obviously recovering faster than Hayes. "From the military." I add, obviously not recovering well enough. No dip he knows he's back from the military.
"Yep. And you're back from college." Hayes responds looking down at the ground awkwardly as I do the same thing. I mean the last time I saw him, I had just told him that I couldn't be with him anymore since he couldn't control himself.
"You know when I pictured us meeting again, I never thought it would be this awkward." Hayes says, a grin appearing on his face and making me laugh. He had pictured us meeting again? Well I did too, I can't even lie about that.
"You know I thought it would be awkwarder." I said honestly also producing a laugh from Hayes. Even after what happened, it's so good to see him. I've missed him, even after all that happened, Hayes was my best friend.
Reading my mind, Hayes suddenly wrapped his arms around my waist pulling me in for a hug. I instinctiviely hug him back, instantly melting into his embrace as if we're seniors at prom again. Amber Elizabeth Rhodes you are a taken woman! This thought makes me pull away.
"It's really great to see you Hayes." I say when I pull away, Hayes's cheeks slightly red and I'm sure mine are too.
"You too Amber, you too."
"I mean it, it was great running into you. I just, I-I'm sorry Hayes. It was wrong of me to leave like-"
"Amber, you don't have to apologize, I totally understand why you broke up with me. I was out of control. Don't feel bad about it at all, besides it was four years ago." He says and I smile at how sweet he is. "It was great running into you too."
"We should hang out sometime." I blurt out, somehow not able to control myself around Hayes. "You know to catch up and stuff."
"Yeah, totally." Hayes says grinning widely, his blue eyes shining even brighter. "I'll um dm you on insta." I nod and he gives me one final nod goodbye before starting to walk away.
