Chapter 13 : Not what it seems

I sit in class next to Lira. Louis and Bryce were sitting in front of us. We are following class when we hear the door open and hit the wall. Everyone jumped a bit. We looked up to see Leader Francis. He lookes at every single one of us. He steps to the bord where the teacher stood but she quickly went to sit on her chair. He stood there in front of the whole class just looking.

"Children, i hope you're having a nice day so far. But i am here to speak about some rules." he said and i heard Lira swallow that's how quiet it was. Everyone was terrified of Leader Francis, for good reasons.

"You kids are all only 10-11 years old but i thought the rules were simple and clear. But children have to be so hard headed right." He said. "Can someone tell me what the rules are in conflict with the Demons?" Nobody spoke up or raised his hand.

"No one? Louis, tell me the rules." He commanded. Louis spoke up. "The rules say not to talk to Demons unless necessary, sir." He says. Leader Francis nods.

"Now listen up kids. The rules may not say you can't cross the border but if i see you do it or i hear that you did it there will be concequences." He said and we all knew what that ment.

He looked at Vanessa. My classmate and slowly walkes to her desk with low footsteps. Vanessa stiffens a bit and i hear Louis let out a long breath from relief that he wasn't standing in front of him anymore.

When he stands right in front of Ayla he speaks. "Hello Vanessa, I'm going to ask you a question ok?" She nods.
"Did you cross the border?"
"No, sir." She said with a shaky voice. "Are you sure?" She didn't answer but looked like she wanted to cry.
"Answer me and don't lie!" Leader Francis said raising his voice. Everyone jumped at his voice.

"Yes, i crosed the border." She said while a couple tears rolled down her cheek. "Why?" Leader Francis asked.
"I was just curious. I won't do it again, sir." She says.
"Yea, i'll take care you won't ever again."

He pulled her out of her chair and pushed her to the guard he brought with him, that is now standing by the door. "And you!" Leader Francis said pointing at Bryce.
"I saw you talk to a demon." He said.

"Yes, sir." Bryce answered. He didn't hesitate to pull Bryce out of his chair too. I raised my hand and it took Leader Francis' attention. He nodded for me to speak.

"What if some Demons are nice? Can we talk to them then?" It was out of my mouth before i knew it.
"What's your name?" He asked. I swallowed hard trying to take a deep breath.
"Kaya Ovana, sir."

"Well, Kaya there is no such thing as a nice Demon. Come forward." He demanded. So i did. Slowly is step out of my chair and i saw Lira's eyes for 2 seconds, but her eyes were full with worry. Leader Francis took my arm and pulled me out of the classroom togheter with Vanessa and Bryce.

We came by a room and Vanessa got pushed in with a guard. Next door Bryce got pushed in and then the last door i got pushed in. I fell on my knees but quickly stood back up.

Right in front of me stood Leader Francis himself. He mostly never did punishments.

The first hit hurted but as definitely not the most painfull one. By the end of my punishment i had bruises all over my body. I layed on the floor scared it was going to be more painfull if i move.

"Demons are not nice, NEVER. Do you understand Kaya?" He aksed and i answered with a 'yes'.

He left me in the room and shut the door loudly.

I snap open my eyes. I sit up quickly turning the light on. I take deep breathes ignoring the tears escaping my eyes while focusing on my breathing.

I was shaking and crying but eventually calmed down. I looked over at my clock and it was already time to get ready for school. I get dressed, eat, brush my hair and teeth and go to school.

after school

I have been very silent today. I barely talked i kept remembering the nightmare i had. When i was a kid i got punished like 5 times. That's not so much considering others. Leader Francis somehow convinced the parents that this was for the good too. All angels know Leader Francis is doing this.

I got a couple "Are you okay?" From Miles, Noah and some others too. I told Lira from the beginning about the nightmare so she understood why i was like this.
