“sir, you have to leave. she has a no visitor policy.”

“that can’t possibly be true, she’s a minor, she can’t make that decision.”

“she absolutely can, she’s a patient here and mentally capable of making her own decision, she requested to have zero visitors during her stay here with the exception of one person and that person isn’t you.”

“check it again.” he insisted.

“you must leave and i will have you escorted out.” the security guard told the man.

“mr. kelly?” the man’s last name was called and he turned around and huffed when he saw police. “what? what is this?”

“mr. kelly, you are being arrested for rape, child abuse, money laundering, assault, and tresspassing.”

“what are you talking about? you have the wrong guy.”

“i can assure we have the right guy,” the police officer said before handcuffing mr. kelly.

“you have the right to remain silent, anything you say can be used against you in court, you have the right to talk to a lawyer, if you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed to you.”

mr. kelly grunted as the cuffs were tightened on his wrists and as he was let out of the hospital met with the both the stares and disgusted looks that were sent his way.

-

“i can’t believe you have me doing this.” maya walked out of the room. “so? what do you think?” carina asked.

“uh i don’t know, it's difficult, there isn’t really a word to describe what she’s been through, i see why you want to help her, i still don’t know.”

“webber just paged me, we can go to his office right now.” carina told her and maya nodded before walking with the woman to the old man’s office.

they opened the door and walked in, “i spoke with a few people from child protective services and after many debates, there’s a way she can stay with you, you two can become her legal guardians.”

“it takes months before you become someone’s legal guardian.” maya pointed out.

“yes, that is true, but because of the dire situation, she can stay with you guys as the process goes on.”

“that’s it, there’s nothing else we need to do?”

“yes, but are you sure she expressed her wishes about wanting to no longer reside at the shelter?”

“she said it herself.”

“what about the shelter owner?” maya asked.

“he was just arrested here at the hospital a few hours ago. for reese, you two will sign this, but are you two sure about this?”

“i’m sure,” carina nodded.

“are you sure?” she asked maya. “you really want this?” maya raised an eyebrow and carina vigorously nodded.

“i hope you do know that raising her won’t be easy, she is considered trouble.”

“yeah, we understand, what do we have to sign?” maya asked. “right here, but if you do agree, she has to be in school and she has to sober up.”

“we’ll get that sorted out, won’t we?”

-

“i’m sorry, you guys are letting me stay with you?” reese asked.

“uh yeah, we’re in the process of becoming your legal guardians, you will never see that man again, okay?”

“i- i can’t except that offer, thanks but no, i can't."

“hey, look i know you’re nervous and we want to help you, and you have to allow us to help.” carina told reese.

“no, like i literally can’t. last time someone tried to do this, the wife thought her husband was cheating with me.”

maya laughed and shook her head, “you’re right, she’s funny.” maya told carina. “there will be no issue like that in our house.”

“are you guys sure? i don’t want to intrude or anything.”

“you aren’t intruding anything, we want you there.”

“thank you.” reese stuttered and maya nodded before getting up and hugging the girl.

“i’m sorry for everything you’ve been through, alright? you’re gonna stay here on a psych hold for three days.”

“what, why? do they think i’m a psycho?”

“no, usually with people in this kind of situation, they develop ptsd, and you said you were hearing voices and dr. turner wants to speak to you for the next few days.”

“i’m guessing i don’t have a choice, so i guess.”

-

“hey kiddo, you ready to go now?” maya asked.

“you said that i’d be in a psych hold, not on suicide watch.” reese mentioned as the two walked in.

“wow, hello to you too.” carina laughed. “they had a nurse watch me as i took a shower, like i’m gonna grab the water and strangle myself with it.”

“there have been many ways people have hurt themselves even with these precautions.”

“it was still unnecessary in my opinion, the nurse they gave me was horrible by the way.”

maya chuckled lightly at her words, “it’s okay, you can finally leave now, carina spent all the time redoing our guest room for you, you like blue right?”

“yeah, it’s no bad.” it was reese’s least favorite color, but they didn’t need to know that.

“dr turner came up with a diagnosis.” maya told her.

“i’m a psycho, aren’t i?”

“no..” maya said with emphasis. “you have an anxiety disorder and schizophrenia.”

“i've never heard those words before?” reese raises an eyebrow.

“i’m not good with the definitions, but i know the right medication will help it.”

“so i am a psycho?” reese mumbled to herself, eliciting laughter from the other two women.

“can we go now? i’d like to take a shower without having a creepy old lady look like she’s about to get off of my body.”

“alright, we’re going to let you get changed and we can go, okay?”

-

“you don’t have to watch her, y’know?” carina whispered to maya. maya turned her head to her wife,

“i feel like if i take my eyes off of her, she’ll just disappear, does that make sense to you?”

“she reminds you of you when you were younger, doesn’t she?”

maya shook her head, “no, she’s been through worse.” she told her.

“either way, you both have been abused by men you trusted one way or another.”

“yeah whatever- you’re gonna get back late if you don’t get on the road now.” maya whispered. “you’re right,” carina nodded. “i’m gonna go, i love you.”

“love you too. drive safe.”
