reese let out a breath and powered her phone back on, unprepared for the relentless pinging that it would be doing.
she quickly silenced it and ignored all of the messages, clearing them out, but stopping when her eyes land on a familiar name.
with shaky hands, she presses the messages, beginning to read them, her heart shattering as she read each and every single one of them.

you know what, im coming over anyway10:57 AM
reese?
i know you're reading this, i just want to say that i know the truth
the one you've been hiding from me
im not disappointed or angry with you, just come home
if not for carina and maya, then for me? please?—
reese turned off her phone and chuckled to herself. they fucking didn't is the only thought roaming through her mind.
she glances at her hands which are still shaking and then towards her bag. "hey." a voice startles her and she turns her head, cursing when she realizes who it is.
"fuck, are you you stalking me, leah?"
leah laughs uncomfortably and shakes her head. "maybe, yeah, you could say that. but i would prefer that i've finally grown the balls to tell you something."
"what?" reese shrugged, scooting over so leah could sit besides her. leah simply looks at reese, examining her facial features and smiling softly to herself.
"you're literally so gorgeous." leah mutters out of nowhere, reaching her hand out to cup reese's face, stopping when reese scurries away from her. "are you on something?"
leah laughs softly to herself and nods, "maybe, but i'm here still and everything i'm about to say is true."
"look, leah, if you're about to say what i think you are, just no."
leah bites her bottom lip and nods in understanding, "you know it's been me and you since we were 11?"
"yeah, i know," reese nodded, not failing at remembering all of the old memories she still tries to erase to this day. "and we've fucked ourselves even more than we already were."
leah rolls her eyes and lets out a loud scoff, "i call it doing what was needed in order to get by."
the glare that reese sent to leah was a deadly one after leah leaned in again. "i said no."
"fine, i admit it, fuck. i'm in love with you. i've been since we met, is that what you want me to say?"
reese simply looked at leah for a split second before chuckling to herself. "i hope you remember that it was you who gave me the percocet that i od'd on and left me there."
"reese, when you were in the hospital, i felt sick for days, i couldn't even sleep."
"you know, i actually have to thank you though. some dope ass people took me in."
"yeah, right, the same people who you just ghosted."
billie's texts linger in reese's mind; although she's pissed off at everyone and everything going wrong, billie needs her.
"i'm going back, there's someone i need to see."
reese stands up abruptly and grabs her bag, ignoring leah's protests and mean words like saying she'll never be fit for anyone else but her.
reese's hands are still shaking despite her efforts to stop it and she turns off her phone, making her way to the same place she wanted to escape from.

"yeah, it's okay, thanks for letting us know." maya sighed after ending the phone call. she leaves the dining room and meets carina in the living room.
"she's just heading out?" she asks about billie and all carina does is nod. "I didn't know how attached i already was." she mumbles out of no where.
"for what it's worth, i'm sorry for what i said." maya sits near her on the couch. "apologize to her, not me," carina sniffled lightly.
"who just called you?" she bats her tears away and looks at her wife with hopelessness. "um, the school," maya clears her throat.
"the administrators— they made a mistake, carina..."
carina places her feet down on the floor and fully faces maya, "what do you mean?"
"the locker they found the weed turned out to not be reese's," maya spoke quickly, unsure of what carina's reaction would be. "she was telling the truth, it wasn't hers."
carina let out a small sigh and rubbed her hands over her face in distraught. "what's their fucking reasoning, hm? they got locker numbers confused?" she snarked harshly at maya.
"or is no one going to admit that reese was just the easiest person to blame?"
"carina, it's not that—"
"hell, even you didn't believe her and now look what happened, she's gone, god knows where when she was perfectly fine with us!"
"baby, we're gonna find her, alright? let's wait to see if she got billie's text."
carina lets out a shaky breath and her and maya wait and wait for what feels like hours and what actually is hours until a small knock is heard on the front door.
carina scurries up and rushes towards the front door, swinging it open. a breath of relief leaves her lips when she spots reese.
she brings her in for a tight hug and shuts the door behind her. "I thought something terrible happened to you." reese shuts her eyes and relax in the warmth of carina's arms.
it's when they pull away that carina tells reese, "we know it wasn't yours. the school just called. we know you're clean."
carina's excitement dims down the tiniest bit for her to realize that something's off. reese shakes her head and reveals her shaking hands to carina.
"...not clean anymore."
