TW: Unhealthy coping mechanisms, including alcohol use and malnutrition. It is only mentioned briefly. Starts angsty, ends with feels.
It had been weeks, and no one had seen or heard from Kara Danvers nor Supergirl. The Superfriends were distraught at her sudden disappearance, but they had to continue on in her absence to keep the criminals at bay in National City. They lied to Andrea, saying that she was with Cat on the story of her life. The DEO made due with the team they had. The first time that J'onn shapeshifted into Supergirl, Lena about had a heart attack. She frantically dialed Alex only to be told that it wasn't really her best friend.
Lena took Kara's absence the worst. She quit sleeping and eating; she drowned herself in alcohol daily. It was rare for her to leave her lab, much less L-Corp. She worked tirelessly on trying to determine where the blonde disappeared. The DEO was unable to track her Kryptonian signature or any sighting documented on the internet. Lena took it a step further and hacked into as many camera feeds globally as she could while running facial recognition software. She even went as far as showing up at Clark's house in Smallville to have him check the Fortress of Solitude to no avail.
Lena was becoming desperate. She kept replaying the last thing that she said before Kara disappeared, "You will never see me again." Lena regretted it every single day. Any time that she did manage to sleep, she woke up to nightmares of Kara saying that to her.
"Ms. Luthor, please. You need to get some rest. You need to go home," Jess insisted gently.
"No, Jess. Not until I fix this. I can't until I fix this."
"Ms. Luthor, she will come back. Just give her some time."
"She has had weeks. National City needs her! Her friends need her! Her mother and sister need her!" Lena shouted. Sobs wracked her body before she barely whispered, "I need her. Just go home, Jess."
Jess hesitantly left her boss alone. She had tried every day to get her boss to take a break, to eat, or to simply just sleep with no luck. She decided to just try something. She knew it was a long shot, but she would rather try and fail then not try at all. Before Jess left for the day, she pulled up her email and composed a simple message to the email the reporter always used to schedule Ms. Luthor's interviews:
Ms. Danvers -
I do not know what caused your sudden departure, but if you read this, Ms. Luthor needs you urgently. She does not know that I am attempting to reach you. I fear she will not last much longer like this.
Kindly,
Jess Huang
It was another sleepless night for Lena when she had a sudden idea. She called for her helicopter. She had never got back in one after her brother tried to kill her. If there was anything that could track down a Kryptonian, Lex's bunker in the mountains would have it. She gripped the seat and handle so tight during the flight, that her hands were numb and white. If anything happened, Supergirl wouldn't be there to save her this time. She told to pilot to leave her there, and she would call when she was ready to be picked up again.
Lena immediately set to work. She dug through all of Lex's insane projects, looking for anything that might aid in locating, signaling, or even communicating with superhero. She found Lexo suits, weapons, and half finished projects. In Lena's frustration, she screamed and trashed the space. As she collapsed on herself on the cold hard concrete floor, she barely heard someone calling out her name over her own cries.
"I thought told you to wait until I called you!" Lena shouted without looking up. She was about to fire her pilot as soon as he flew her back to L-Corp.
