Lena is more nervous than usual. She flits around the kitchen trying to make sure everything is just perfect for the night. Candles are lit on the table with the nice dinnerware set. The entire space smells delicious from the homemade garlic bread to the homemade pasta sauce. While the batches of bread and pasta were comically large, Lena rolls her eyes to herself at the very human sized portion of salad that she's sure that Kara will not even touch.
"I'm home!"
Lena turns as she hears Kara holler as she comes through the balcony door. Just laying eyes on the heroine calls her nerves some. She's quick to wrap the blonde up in a hug but her face scrunches as she catches a whiff.
"Yeah, yeah. I need to shower. Supergirl was needed at a fire."
"Is everyone okay?"
"The building was empty, but a firefighter was cut off by unexpected structural issues. They have to open an investigation into the construction company because they didn't use the appropriate materials."
Lena pecks her on the lips quickly. "Well, I'm glad you were able to save the day. Go shower, and then we can eat."
Kara's eyes finally take in the scene and her mouth drops. "Lee, you did all this?"
Lena wraps her arms around herself as she takes a couple steps back. "Well... yeah. I figured we could use a nice meal."
Kara is quick to notice the self-conscious behavior and wraps her back into a tight hug again. "Thank you, baby. It looks and smells amazing. I'll be out in a flash." Kara presses a kiss to Lena's temple before she speeds off and leaves Lena in a slight breeze.
Lena smiles like an idiot to herself, shaking her head slightly. She starts moving the food to the table and before she sets down the salad, Kara's speeds out to the dining room in some dark jeans and a nice blouse. "Darling, you didn't need to dress up."
"Then, why are you?"
Lena looks down at her dress pants and button-up. "Alright, fair."
"I know what we put on the calendar, but this feels like a fantastic date night. I love you." Kara kisses her gently.
After they separate, Lena whispers out, "I love you, too."
They both sit, and Lena jokingly holds out the bowl of salad to the blonde just to watch the flit of disgust and confusion on that adorable face. Kara starts with the garlic bread pile while patiently waiting on Lena to serve herself the pasta.
"So, do you want to discuss while we eat or after dinner?" Lena asks softly.
Kara swallows her bite before responding. She watches Lena carefully. Lena is a master of disguising and hiding her emotions, but Kara can read her like a book. So, she opts to reach out and place her hand gently over Lena's. She rubs her thumb back and forth to try to help soothe the woman. "I think we should talk about it, and I would like to start if that's okay?"
"Of course, darling," Lena says softly. "Whatever you need, darling."
Kara lifts Lena's hand up to press a kiss to the back of it. "I love you so much. And I love our relationship and dynamic. I feel like you might be anxious about what I am going to say, but I promise that I have nothing bad to say. I'm not going to ask for anything to change. Plus, a very wise woman said that we shouldn't ignore or avoid this conversation. In fact, she insisted on scheduling it."
Lena lets out a tiny smile in response. She feels tears start to well up in her eyes. She doesn't quite understand her reaction, but it is a very emotionally heavy topic. "I love you. And rationally, I know what you are saying, but you know me. I can't help but worry and plan for the worst."
