CHAPTER 6
"Come ON, Liam! We have to get going!" I called to Liam while he was taking his sweet time in his bedroom. We were meant to be at Donna's house to babysit the twins in a few minutes, yet Liam seemed to enjoy taking forever and stressing me out. "Okay, okay," Liam said, coming out of his bedroom, pulling a shirt over his head, "Lets go." I opened the front door as Liam followed behind me. It was close to dinner time, and luckily the rain had stopped. Liam and I jogged down to the sand and made our way running towards my neighbours house.
We got there breathless and I knocked on their patio door. I saw little Finn come barreling for the door, screaming my name. He had to stop himself before he slammed into the glass door. I laughed as he struggled to open the door. I helped him open it and as soon he could squeeze through he wrapped his arms around my waist, being the highest he could reach and hugged me around my middle. "Hey, Finny, how are you buddy?" I asked him, getting down to his level as he let go. "I'm happy, I missed you Brooklyn!" He exclaimed and wrapped me in another hug. I found myself laughing.
It felt good to be around children. They were always so affectionate and forgiving, especially the young ones, they could never hold a grudge.
I stood up straight as I saw Donna walking towards me holding Mia's hand. She smiled shyly at me but then hid behind her mother as she saw Liam. "Hello, Mia," I said to her. She wouldn't look at me as she kept a watchful eye on Liam. "Mia," Donna said, "Say hi to Brooklyn." "Hi," she said quietly. Donna looked up at me with an apologetic look. I shook it away, "Hey, Mia, I hear you're starting school soon!" I said, crouching down to her level. Finn came over and sat on my knee, waiting for his sister to break her shell. She took a small step out into the open, she nodded her head. "Are you going to school with Finn?" I asked her. She smiled and shook her head, "I don't want him there!" I laughed, at her innocent words. She saw my smile and I guess that made her feel more comfortable. She let go of her mothers hand and came towards me with open arms. I hugged her tiny body and felt her soft brown curls brush my cheek.
The twins shared their looks. They were both blessed with bouncy chocolate brown curls that shaped both their faces perfectly, and the most majestic green eyes anyone could ever imagine.
"Thank you so much Brooklyn, for coming over," Donna said to me, "I'm sure the twins are going to love spending time with you and Liam." I smiled at her, "It's really no problem at all. I'm glad to help!" Donna smiled, "Mark and I should be back at around 9, hopefully not too late after that. There's food in the fridge, help yourselves to anything. The twins will probably want peanut butter and jam sandwiches, but they might be up for a change. Um... Their bed time is around 7:30, nothing much later than that...I think that's about it..." She said just as Mark came around the corner, "Hello, Brooklyn, good to see you!" He said to me. I smiled politely, "Hello! It's good to see you too!" "Well we'll see you two later then," Donna said, "I hope I'm not forgetting anything." "You're fine, Hun. Now lets go before you start feeling separation anxiety from the kids." Donna nodded her head and I stood there with Finn and Mia still attached to me and watched Donna and Mark leave.
"So who wants to go for a walk?" I asked. Mia and Finn became excited in seconds. "I do! I do! I do!" Finn exclaimed jumping to his feet. "Me-e-e-e-e!" Mia said. I laughed and looked over at Liam, having forgotten he was there. "Oh!" I said, "I forgot to tell you guys! This is Liam," I said pointing to Liam standing awkwardly off to the side. He smiled and Finn being friendly ran up to Liam and have him a hug. Liam seemed surprised at first, but then he smiled at me for reassurance and hugged Finn back. "Hello there," Liam said with a chuckle. Finn pulled away wide eyed and with his mouth gaping, "You talk funny!" He said. Liam looked up at me as I said, "Finn! Don't say that! He doesn't talk funny, he just has an accent!" "What's an accent?" Mia asked me, taking hold of my hand. I looked down at her then over at Finns confused face, "Well I guess you could just say Liam talks funny." This made the four year olds giggle. "How about that walk?" Liam said, rubbing his hands together. I looked down at Mia and she smiled at me. "I think us girls are ready, how about you boys?" Liam and Finn shared a glance. I couldn't help but find myself smiling as Liam bent down to Finn's height and said, "I'll race you!" Finn's face light up and he was quick to bolt away from Liam and down the steps. Liam ran after him, running slowly to make sure Finn won the race. "Be careful!" I called after them as Mia and I began to walk down to the beach. Once we got there, we turned left and followed Liam and Finn in the direction of Liam's house.
I found myself smiling as Liam chased after Finn, sometimes picking him up in the air and throwing him over his shoulder, or falling far behind and faking an injury just to have Finn come back and he would tease him and dash ahead. Liam always let Finn get ahead of him, claiming Finn was too fast for him and that there was no way he could keep up with someone so fast.
Finn was beaming with pride as Mia and I caught up to them. They were standing in front of Liam's house and Finn was enjoying his victory dance. "I won! I won! I won!" He said. He stuck out his tongue at Liam. "Hey," I warned, "Be nice, Finn. Apologize to Liam." Finn stopped dancing, "I'm sorry Liam." "Do you mean that from your heart?" I asked. Finn turned to me and nodded his head, "Tell that to Liam not me," I said, pointing back to Liam. Finn turned, "I'm sorry Liam, I didn't mean that." I let out a breath as Liam crouched down to his level, "It okay Finn, I accept your apology." Finn smiled, "Yay!" "Mia why don't you take Finn over by the rocks and find some small ones to throw into the ocean," I told Mia. She looked up at me beaming. She let go of my hand and grabbed her brothers. I watched them run off then turned to find Liam watching me. "You're amazing with kids," he said to me. I smiled and turned back to Finn and Mia. Liam came to my side and we watched the twins. "You're not too bad yourself," I commented. "They really love you," Liam told me. I smiled, "I know, and I love them too." He took my hand in his, "I think you would make a great mother one day." "Whoa there British boy," I said with a laugh turning to him. "What?" He said in defence, "I'm just saying One Day." I shook my head, "please don't be putting those thoughts into my mind." He chuckled.
I turned back to Mia and Finn to find them further off than I had expected. I went to call after them, but a frightening sight stopped me.
"Liam," I said, gripping his hand, "Please tell me you see that too...?" Liam turned around and followed my gaze.
There, just 20 feet away from the twins was someone watching them. They were dressed in dark clothing and I could tell within seconds that it was the person who had been watching us the night before. They had their eyes locked on Mia and Finn. "Liam," I said my voice cracking. But at that moment he had already left my side. He was running towards Mia and Finn, calling their names, trying to get them away from that person. I felt useless as I watched Liam snatch both the twins up in each of his arms and spin on his heel, running back towards me. I watched as the person suddenly looked up and saw me, they hesitated as I watched them, then quickly ran into the bushes. I was in a trance until Liam came back with the twins in his arms. Luckily they had not seen the person watching them like prey. Liam set them down and I guess the twins thought it was all a game because Mia came up to me and showed me the rocks she found. I was distracted as I smiled and nodded my head.
Liam must have seen my sudden discomfort with what just happened because he spoke up, "Would you two like to see my house?" Mia screamed out a 'Yes' as Finn's face light up and he nodded his head furiously. "Come on," he said, leading them up his walk to the house. "Is Brooklyn coming?" I heard Finn ask Liam. All three of them turned and looked back at me. I couldn't tear my eyes off the place where that person has been standing. "Brooklyn?" Liam said. I snapped out of it and began walking towards them. "Is Brooklyn okay?"Mia asked Liam. "I'm fine, sweetie," I told her. I waited for her to grab my hand but she just accepted my response and grabbed Liam's hand.
Once we made if inside, I found a spot on the couch as Liam found a movie for the twins to watch. I was trying not to tremble so that the twins wouldn't notice, but it was all so frightening. That same person with the dark complexion and sunken face had been standing 20 feet away from Finn and Mia. That person had been watching two innocent four year olds like they were prey. I could feel a chill still within my body. I suddenly didn't feel safe on that beach anymore.
