CHAPTER 12
"Do you two know each other?" Niall asked as he kept glancing between Liam and I. I ignored him as I waited for Liam to do something. Whatever he did right now would define the next few moments of my life.
'If fate brings us back together, then we were meant to be.'
Those were Liam's words back at the beach house. If fate brought us together, here today, it had to mean something. He couldn't just shove this off. It's something I know he isn't capable of.
Liam ran his hand through his hair, puffing out his cheeks as he let out a breath. "Yeah, we ah...we were um... We're..." He was stumbling over his words.
A million thoughts were running through my head. But then one stopped me. As Liam tried to figure out how to tell his band mate Niall who we were to each other. I remembered my fathers threat. If anyone found out about Liam and I dating, or if any pictures of us were leaked, he would pull me out of the university. "We don't!" I practically yelled. Liam and Niall turned to me, "I mean, we've only met each other once! I um..." I didn't know what to make up, "We met on a flight once. It-it was nothing, just, friendly faces. We don't really know each other." I saw Niall look at me with confused eyes, but then he brushed it off. "Well give that to Ann will ya? Come on mate, we have to get back to the studio!" Niall said, taking Liam's arm and turning him around. I watched as Liam looked back at me over his shoulder while Niall led him out of the cafe. I had to look away from his eyes. He was looking at me like I had become someone he didn't know. The agony in his eyes caused my heart to throb. Fate brought us back together, but I just defied fate, probably causing fate to work against us now. He probably won't ever want to see me again, not while I just basically tore his heart out and stomped on it. Kind of the same thing he did to me at the beach house.
"He left?" Ann said, coming up behind me. I snapped out of a trance, "Oh, um yeah. Here," I said, handing her the piece of paper with Niall's number on it, "Congratulations." I pressed the paper into her hand without making eye contact. I turned around and untied my apron, leaving it under the counter where Marcus wanted it. I didn't look back as I slipped out from behind the counter and walked out of the cafe. I walked fast down the street, not looking where I was going. I don't know why I had told Ann congratulations. I guess it was just built up anger and emotions. I guess I was jealous that her love life was just starting out, and she had no problems. While mine was in full swing and had countless problems with no solutions.
"Brooklyn?" I heard someone with a British accent call me. But I was in London, that could have been anybody. I looked up, but the street was crowded. I felt my heart pounding within my rib cage as I saw Liam and Niall standing on a street corner, waiting to cross. "Brooklyn!" I heard someone call my name again. My heart dropped into my stomach as Liam's lips didn't even move. However, he did look up, and his head spun around, until his eyes landed on me. I saw him stand up straighter and turn towards me. But then someone stepped in front of my vision. I stepped back slightly and saw Hunter standing in front of me, "Brooklyn! I've been calling after you for a few blocks now!" "Oh," I said, "Sorry." "That's fine," he said. I took this moment to glance over Hunter's shoulder. I saw Liam had looked down at the ground and he was slowly turning away. Full of embarrassment and let down. "So, are you heading back to the university?" Hunter asked me. I brought my attention back to him. "Um, yeah," I mumbled. Trying to step past him. But he fell into step beside me. "Well, do you want to take a little detour?" I kept my eyes ahead of me as I walked. "I'm kind of not in the mood for anything," I stated. "Oh, come on, Blondie!" He said, stepping in front of me and blocking my path, "Please, I just want to take you out to dinner." "Not tonight, Hunter, sorry," I told him. He seemed confused. "I'm just not in the mood!" I snapped at him. I pushed past him and walked away. I glanced up and saw Liam had his eyes on me. I could tell with that one look he had witnessed the whole thing. I swallowed hard as my eyes became watery. With Liam's look, I glanced away and began to run. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Liam break away from Niall and run after me. "Brooklyn?" He called. But I just kept running. "Brooklyn, please stop!" He chased after me, through the crowded streets of London. He somehow managed to catch up to me. He grabbed my hand, but as he spun me around to face him, I tore my hand away. He looked down at me, but I didn't look up, instead, I threw my arms around his middle and hugged him. He was shocked at first, but then he slowly put his arms around me. "Hi, love," he said to me. I smiled through my tears as he stroked back my hair the way he always did. "Are you okay?" He asked after a moment of silence. I took a deep breath and took a step back from him, "I'll survive." "It's good to see you," he said, taking my hand. I gently slipped my fingers from his grasp. "Liam," I said quietly. "You still hate me don't you?" He said, taking the hint. "I don't...I don't hate you Liam," I told him, "I don't know what I think anymore." "Brooklyn, fate brought us back together. This thing called us was meant to happen," he told me. "Fate may have brought us back together, but that's only because you made a foolish mistake," I told him, "If you would not have thrown in the towel, we wouldn't be going through this. Liam if you wouldn't have broken it off, I wouldn't be having second thoughts about you." "So, you mean, even if I still love you immensely, you don't think we can be together?" He asked me. "Can we not do this here?" I practically shouted. "Fine we'll go to the studio," he said. "There's still people there," I stated. "What about my flat?" "Liam I can't do this! I have to go back to the university!" "We could talk there," he suggested. "Liam you don't get it! This is too much, I need time to think! Go home or something!" I turned around and for the billionth time I left Liam behind as I walked away. Most likely looking like a coward, or seeming selfish. I may have been those, but I was only human, I have my flaws too.
"Brooklyn, where in the world have you been?" Ann was already at my throat as I walked into our dorm at almost 8 o'clock. Our shift had ended 2 hours ago, and this was my first time back since then. "I went for a walk," I said, plopping down on my bed. "Where? To Scotland and back? Brooklyn, you had me worried sick!" "I know," I said, staring up at the ceiling, "But I'm fine, okay?" A gust of silence passed between us. "So what happened back there? At the cafe? Who was that guy with Niall?" I took a deep breath, "Just a friend," I mumbled, rolling over onto my side to face the wall. "He didn't seem like just a friend?" Ann continued. "He's a FRIEND," I snapped at her. "I'm going to go for a walk around campus, you obviously need some time," Ann said, getting up from her bed and leaving through the door. I sighed and rolled onto my back. It took me a while to find my sketch book, but then I was drawing to the sound of music, and letting my heart poor out onto the blank page.
I fell asleep around 10, but was woken up to Ann coming through the door at 11:30. "You blew Hunter off?" She exclaimed, obviously not seeing that I was sleeping. I sat up and rubbed my eyes, peering at her in the dim light. "What?" I asked. "Hunter asked you out on the street after work today and you said NO!" Ann said, sitting down on my bed. "How do you know about that?" I asked her, suddenly worried. "The whole campus knows! You turned down one of the hottest guys here!" Ann said. "Seriously Ann? This isn't high school! Go to bed," I said, pushing her off my bed. She laughed and stumbled over to her bed. Not even bothering to change as she fell to the springy mattress.
"Oh, my god!" She gasped suddenly, "There's another guy!" She exclaimed. "What?" I practically yelled. "There has to be another guy! That's the only reason why you would refuse Hunter! Ah! What's his name?" Ann seemed overly giddy tonight. "Go to bed!" I shouted at her and tossed a pillow at her face. She laughed and said, "Fine, but I get to know who this guy is tomorrow morning!" She exclaimed. "Maybe," I laughed. "Night Brooklyn!" Ann said. "Goodnight Ann," I told her. All the while thinking, if I had it my way, she would never know who Liam is. If I have it my way, no one will ever know we dated. I can't risk my education.
