CHAPTER 5

I sat at the kitchen table with my mother, watching the rain fall down outside. "Where did they go?" My mother asked, venturing cautiously into the subject of my father and Liam having a 'little talk' outside. I took a deep breath and drummed my fingers on the table, "I don't know," I mumbled. I didn't know if I should be scared or not. My father had never physically hurt anybody, and I didn't want now to be the first time. He had seemed furious yet determined when he had demanded to talk to Liam out in the pouring rain. My mother rested her hand over mine. It was warm compared to my icy skin. "It's going to be okay, sweetie. Your father probably just wants to make sure what you said is true and he's getting reassurance from Liam." "Okay," I said quietly. I didn't know what to think. My mind always jumped to the worst. Liam was new in my family's life, so he doesn't know them as well as he knows me. I hope that he doesn't get scared off by my father.

I kept my eye on a rain drop slowly making its way down the window. It kept me concentrated as it swerved from side to side. After 6 raindrops my anxiety was taking over. I hadn't realized that my leg was bouncing up and down, while my fingers gripped my glass of juice so hard that my knuckles became white. "Honey are you okay?" My mother asked, putting a hand on my knee to stop my shaking. But I just shook my head and pushed away from her, "I need to go for a drive," I told her, "I'm feeling claustrophobic and confined." I got up from the table and didn't bother with another word as I grabbed the spare keys for the car and headed out into the pouring rain. I didn't care if my shirt became soaked and my hair drenched. I walked around the corner of the house to where the car was supposed to be parked, but I stopped as I saw it wasn't there. I spun in circles as my wet hair stuck to my face. Perfect. My father had taken the car. I tossed the keys up onto the porch and didn't look back as I headed up my drive way towards the road.

I saw fresh tire marks in the dirt road, my father must have just left. I began to walk towards town. The rain itself was slightly warm, and I found that odd, but as I closed my eyes and turned my face to the sky, I didn't think about it as I let the rain drops sink in. As I opened my eyes, I looked down at the ground and saw foot prints in the dirt. I found that strange, but when I looked up again, I wasn't surprised to see the silhouette of a person walking ahead of me. At first glance I was hesitant, but as I began to get closer, I saw it was Liam. I blinked a few times to make sure I wasn't seeing things, then I called his name. He spun around with his hand in his pockets and squinted against the rain to see me. I jogged up to him. "What are you doing out here?" He asked, almost having to shout over the sound of the falling rain. "I could ask you the same thing!" I responded just as loud. "Go home, Brooklyn!" He said. I furrowed my eye brows, "What? Why?" I asked. He ran his hand through his sopping wet hair, "Just please, go home, dry off and stay warm." "What about you?" I asked, trying to be loud enough to be heard over the rain. "I'll be fine," he said. "Why are you walking home? Where did my father go?" I asked. I felt the rain dripping down my arms. "I don't know, he told me to go home and then left," Liam said. I ran my hand through my long hair, getting my fingers tangled in it. "What did he say to you?" I asked. "Nothing!" Liam shouted over the rain. I studied his face, his posture and his body language, "What happened between you two?" "Just forget it, Brooklyn, I don't want to talk about it!" "Fine," I shouted, "But you're coming back to my house." Liam shook his head and water fell away from his hair, "Your dad will go back eventually and he said he doesn't want to see me there for the rest of the day." I sighed, "Well then I'm coming to your house." I saw him hesitate slightly, but I didn't want to give him the chance to talk me out of it. "Lets go," I said, grabbing his arm and leading him down the dirt road.

"Oh, my! Liam! Brooklyn! Are you okay?" Liam's mother asked as we burst through the door of his house sopping wet. "Yeah, mum, we're fine," Liam said, laughing. He pulled me behind him as he made his way to the washroom. I closed the front door and smiled at his mother before he pulled me down a hallway. He left me in the washroom as he ventured out into the hallway again. I stood on a carpet as I looked at myself in the mirror. I was completely soaked. I stood over the sink as I ringed out my hair. Liam came back just as I was about to ring out my shirt. "Here, love," he said, handing me a towel. "Thank you," I said, then began to dry off my face and arms. He did the same and rubbed the towel on his head, drying his hair. I giggled slightly as he took the towel away to reveal his hair in a mess. He just smiled and shook his head. "We need to get out of these wet clothes," I told Liam. He nodded his head, "I'll be right back." He left me alone in the bathroom again but his mother came by just as he left. "You two are mad!" She said. I laughed, "It felt good to just not care for a while." She smiled, "You bring out a different side of him." I felt my cheeks become warm, "I had no idea," I said quietly. She folded her arms across her chest and leaned up against the door frame, "You make him happy. Happier than he has ever been." My cheeks were warm before but now they were burning, "He makes me happy too." Just then, Liam appeared at the door, changed into a pair of shorts. Again he had no shirt on and I counted myself lucky. He handed me a bundle of clothes. "It's just some pyjama pants and an old t-shirt," he said. I felt Liam's mother watching me. I looked up at her to find her smiling. Liam followed my gaze, "Mum!" He said, "Go see dad or something!" She laughed and held her hands up in defence, "Okay, okay, I'm leaving." I watched her go then playfully hit Liam's arm, "That wasn't nice, I love your mom!" He pursed his lips at me, "Oh really now?" He teased. "Yes," I said, "As a matter of fact I do." He smiled at me, but I pushed him out of the bathroom to get changed.
