CHAPTER 1

"Liam, please stop," I said as I pulled away from him a smile forming on my lips. I looked down at the ground, turning away, but he chuckled lightly and pulled me back in. "Why? Are you embarrassed?" He asked in a teasing tone. I wouldn't meet his eyes, "Come on," I said. He kissed my forehead as we stood in the kitchen of my beach house. "Why can't I show you any affection when I'm here?" He asked. "Because," I said, "My father still doesn't like the idea of me dating, you know that." He sighed and wrapped his strong arms around me, resting his chin on the top of my head, "I know," he breathed, "I just wish he could see that I won't ever hurt you." I pulled away from him and smiled, "He knows that," I said, walking over to the fridge. "Then why does he hate me?" Liam asked. I turned to him, "He doesn't hate you Liam," I said. "Oh really?" Liam said, coming up behind me and slipping his arms around my waist, "Then why am I not allowed to do this in his presence?" I turned around in his grasp and put my arms up and across his shoulders, "Because no matter what, I will always be his little girl," I said, placing a kiss on his lips. Liam sighed as I pulled away once again. "Why do you keep doing that?" He asked, leaning up against the counter as I filled a glass of juice for myself. "Doing what?" I asked innocently. "You keep pulling away," he said, folding his arms across his chest. "Because," I said as I poured a glass of juice for Liam, "he will be home any minute." Liam pursed his lips and I couldn't help but smile, I walked up to him and put the glass in his hand as I placed a kiss on his cheek, "And we don't need him getting angry, now do we?" "No," Liam said in defeat. I giggled, "Good, now let's head outside. My mom is going to wonder why we were gone for so long." Liam stood up straight and began to follow after me, but stopped suddenly. "Liam," I said, turning around, "Is everything okay?" He had his eyes glued to the kitchen table, "Do you remember the first time we sat here together?" He asked me. I furrowed my eye brows, "Um, no," I said. "It was the day before the party, last year," he said, running his fingers across the solid wood, "I wanted to help with set up and you refused, but I took your hand and looked into your eyes, and you just gave in." I felt my cheeks become warm, "I wasn't that easy, was I?" Liam chuckled softly and looked up at me, "You were like that the whole summer," he said, "I remember it all like it was yesterday." I felt bad because there were so many things that I forgot about last summer. How could I have let myself forget? It was the best summer of my life. I had met Liam and fallen in love. We should have so many memories about that summer, but I felt terrible because I had forced myself to forget them. That was mostly for the fact that I thought Liam was never coming back. But here we are, a year later, standing in the kitchen of the infamous beach house where it all started.

I placed my glass down and walked towards Liam who was studying the table, he glanced up at me as I took his hand. "Did you know that there wasn't one moment in the last year that I wasn't thinking about you?" He put his own glass down and took my other hand as we stood facing each other, "Really?" He asked. I nodded my head, "You're all I could think about." He smiled, "Good because you're all I could think about too." Suddenly I heard someone clear their throat, I let go of Liam's hands and spun around. "Hi daddy," I said as I saw my father standing in the door way. "That was all very touching...but keep your hands off my daughter, Liam," my father sneered. Liam took a large step away from me, "Yes, sir," he said. The room became silent, and I could feel the tension quickly growing. I glanced back and forth between Liam and my father. Liam looked terrified, while my father looked like he was ready to blow a fuse. We had to get out of the kitchen or my father might say more that he should, "Um," I said, "We're going to go outside and sit with mom." My father finally tore his eyes off of Liam and looked at me, "Fine, honey, but Liam, no funny business," he said coldly. Liam nodded his head. His eyes were wide in fear as I pushed him out the sliding door. Once I closed it, Liam took a deep breath, "He hates me," he said, "Why does he hate me?" "He doesn't hate you, Liam," I said as we walked up to my mother. "Who hates who?" She asked. I sighed, "Liam thinks dad hates him." My mother chuckled, "I'm sorry, bud, my husband may have trouble coping with the fact that you're dating our daughter. But I promise you, he doesn't hate you." "But that's the thing," Liam said, pulling out a chair for me to sit down. He did it almost unconsciously as he spoke, "I want him to know that I will never hurt Brooklyn. I'll treat her right, I promise you that." My mother sat forward as Liam sat down beside her, "I know sweetie," she said taking his hand and holding it in both of hers, "I trust you will treat her with respect and care. David is just stubborn," she sat back in her chair and smiled, "Just like Brooklyn." "Hey!" I said, "Don't be comparing my stubbornness to his!" This made Liam and my mother laugh. "Don't worry, sweetie," my mother said, "We still love you." I stuck out my tongue at her, then turned and watched the water. I saw the waves rolling up onto the beach and I remembered when my two best friends Katrina and Valerie had been up to visit only a few days ago. They had stayed for two weeks and got to meet Liam, but it felt like they were leaving all too soon. I missed them, but at the same time, I was happy I could make up the year that Liam and I had lost. The sun was high in the sky, and there was a breeze warm and small. I closed my eyes and embraced all of my senses; the smell of the salt water, the sound of the waves, the heat on my skin and the slight breeze, the taste of my freshly squeezed orange juice in my mouth. And then I opened my eyes to tie it all in together. I missed St. Thomas. It was good to be back.

I closed my eyes once again, and felt Liam take my hand. He squeezed it slightly then tangled his fingers in mine. Suddenly I heard someone coming up the backstairs. My eyes shot open and my hand tore away from Liam. "It's okay, Love," he said to me, "It's just your neighbour." I let out a sigh of relief as I saw my American next door neighbour, Donna, coming up the stairs. "Hello!" she said cheerfully. "Oh, hi there Donna, it's good to see you!" My mother said. "The same for you! How have y'all been?" She had a strong southern accent and I couldn't help but giggle. Liam smiled and tried to shush me. He took my hand again and that calmed me down. "We've been good, we had a long stressful year, but that's why we have this beach house, to get away from it all," my mother said. "I know what you mean," Donna said, "So anything new happening?" My mother sat forward, "Oh, Donna, I have the best thing to tell you. Brooklyn graduated with the highest grades in her class, AND got a scholarship to a culinary school!" "Oh-h-h-h!" Donna said, clapping her hands in excitement, "We've got ourselves a little smarty pants over here!" I felt my cheeks become warm, "More like a hard core nerd," I said. Donna shoed my words away, "Nonsense," she said, "Intelligence is attractive in a woman!" I felt Liam watching me and as I glanced over he smiled at me, "I agree," he said. I felt my cheeks become warm. "Now who's this young man?" Donna said, "I don't think we've ever met!" I giggled as Liam reached up to meet Donna's out stretched hand. "I'm Donna, and what's your name?" "Liam," he said. I don't know why, but his sudden formality seemed so cute. I couldn't stop smiling. "He moved into the Keller's old house last summer," my mother said. "Oh, last summer? I'm surprised we haven't bumped into each other yet!" Liam chuckled slightly. "You know," my mother said, leaning in, "Brooklyn and Liam are a couple now." "Mom!" I said. But this only made the two women laugh. I felt my cheeks become warm once again and Liam gave my hand a squeeze under the table. "Yup, the new celebrity couple," she bragged. "Mom!" I said again. "Celebrity couple?" Donna asked. I brought my hand up to my face and shook my head I'm embarrassment. "Oh yes Donna," my mother said, "Liam was on a show called the X-Factor, back in London, and let’s just say, he's stealing more hearts than just Brooklyn's." "Mom, really, you can stop right there," I said to her. But they seemed to be enjoying my embarrassment, even Liam was laughing. "But nobody knows about us yet," Liam said, "and we kind of need to keep it that way." "And why is that?" Donna asked. "Because," Liam said, "It's hard dating when one of the two is in the spotlight, and I don't want Brooklyn getting hurt." "He's a keeper, Brooklyn," Donna said to me. I smiled, "Now if we could just get dad to see that." Liam tensed up at the mention of my father. My mother pursed her lips as Donna looked away as awkwardness filled our conversation. I didn't mean for the conversation to end so abruptly. But Donna had a knack at changing the subject, "So, Brooklyn, I was wondering if you could do me a HUGE favour tomorrow night," Donna said. "Sure," I said, "anything." "I need you to babysit the twins, while Mark and I go out." "Oh," I said a smile coming across my face at the mention of Donna's kids. They were twins, a boy named Finn and a girl named Mia. They were four years old and full of energy and questions. "I'd love to," I told Donna. "That's great, thank you! Oh, and bring Liam along, Finn will love to have him there!" Liam turned to me smiling. I felt my cheeks become warm, this time for no apparent reason. Maybe it was the way he was looking at me. Who knows?
