CHAPTER 2

Donna left soon after and my mother went inside to help my father with dinner. Liam and I were left alone. He couldn't seem to keep his eyes off of me, "Okay," I finally said, "Is there something wrong with my face?" "What?" he said. I sighed, "Why do you keep staring at me?" "I've been staring? It's just, you're breathtaking. Oh, I'm so sorry Brooklyn," Liam said. "Why are you apologizing?" I asked. He looked away from me and down at the ground. "I'm sorry," he said again. "Liam, are you okay?" he shrugged his shoulders. "Liam," I said, lifting his head. He wouldn't meet my eyes, "Is something bugging you?" I asked. I counted to 8 in my head, before he finally looked up. "Can we go for a walk?" he asked. "Sure, but Liam, you have to tell me what's wrong," I said. He nodded his head, "I will, I just can't risk your father overhearing." "Um, okay," I said. He took my hand and led me down the walkway to the beach. He had one hand in his pocket and the other locked in mine. He kept his eyes ahead as we turned left and walked in the direction of his house. We passed two houses before he finally spoke. "Why didn't you tell me about your scholarship?" "What?" I asked, stopping in my tracks. "Why didn't you tell me you got a scholarship to a culinary school?" I looked up at Liam and furrowed my eye brows, "I didn't think you cared." "Brooklyn, of course I care!" Liam said. He let go of my hand and pulled me in towards him, holding me tight, "I'm so proud of you. You're going to do great," there was a slight lack of emotion in the way he said that and I couldn't help but cringe. I didn't know when I should tell him that the school is in London. I was scared, honestly. I was scared to tell him because we've only ever been together at our beach houses and everyone is used to us. We can act like a couple anytime and anywhere. But back in London, Liam is well known, and I'm scared of what he said earlier. I'm scared now that he's in the spotlight. I don't want to be some girl.

"But the water is cold!" I complained as Liam tried to drag me into the ocean. "No, it isn't! Come on, Brooklyn." Liam said laughing. So much for a nice walk along the beach, I thought to myself. "Liam, seriously, I don't want to get wet, it's almost dinner time!" "Oh, come on Canadian Girl, I thought you were used to cold?" Liam said, pulling my hands as he stood with his feet in the water. "Cold weather, not cold water!" I said, with a scream as he got my feet into the water. "You know what?" he said letting me go. "What?" I said, backing out of the water. "I give up," he said, throwing his hands up in defeat and walking out of the water towards me. "Thank you," I said, resting my hands on my hips. "Brooklyn," Liam said, coming up to me and placing his hands over mine. "Yes?" I said, regaining my breath. He smiled, "I lied." "What?" I said. But he had already grabbed me and lifted me over his shoulder. I screamed in laughter as he ran towards the water. "Liam!" I screeched as he began splashing around. "Stop it!" I giggled, "Let me down!" "As you wish!" he said as he dropped me down into the cold water. I came back out sputtering water everywhere. "You've got nerve, Payne!" I said. But he just smiled and came towards me in the water. We were about waist deep and he came up to me, gently moving my wet hair from my face. "But you still love me right?" he asked, letting his hands rest on my cheeks. I could feel his fingers finding their way towards the back of my neck. "No," I lied. But he just smiled mischievously. "Too bad," he said as he leaned in and pressed his lips to mine. I felt a smile form on my lips as he wrapped his arms around me and lifted me out of the water and spun around. I giggled as he attempted to set me back down but he fell in along with me.

We waded up to a shallow part of the beach and sat in the water. "I've missed this," Liam said, moving closer to me. I pulled my knees into a cross legged position and took Liam's hand. I began playing with his fingers as he watched the water and the sun gradually making its way lower. "I never want this summer to end," he said quietly. I turned to sit facing him, "You said that last year," I said, still not looking up as I fiddled with his fingers. "Which reminds me," he said, taking his hand away which made me look up at him, but only so he could push a piece of my hair behind my ear. "What?" I said. Liam studied my face for a while, but then shook his head, "Nah, it won't work out," he said. "What? Why? Tell me!" I said, suddenly interested. "No, it can't happen. You're going off to school," he said, playing with my hair that hung over my shoulder. He wouldn't meet my eyes. "Liam," I said, placing my hand over his, "You can tell me." He sighed, his eyes glancing up to meet mine, "I wanted you to come back to London with me for a while." "What?" I said, shock probably covering my face. "Yeah, I know it's crazy," he said letting his hand fall away from my hair, "Your father probably won't let you, it was a stupid thought." "Liam," I said, taking his hand, "After August, my father doesn't have a say in this, because ill be at school." "But, Brooklyn, I'm not going to make you skip school because I want you with me," he said. "I won't be skipping," I said casually. "How?" He said as if daring me to come up with an answer. "Because I got a scholarship to a culinary school..." I paused, "In London."
