The sound of Guqin drifted out of Jingshi.
Lan Wangji sighed before he finally stopped playing. It has been half a month since he is in seclusion. Xiongzhang came to visit twice, clearly worried. He asked Lan Wangji what was wrong repeatedly, though in carefully disguised words.
But what can Lan Wangji actually tell.
His thoughts only paused at one person.
Wei Ying.
It feels like a lifetime since he last saw that obnoxious boy laughing happily, calling out to him in that excited, happy voice. It feels like forever since he had bright silver eyes focussed on him.
Wei Ying.
His first love.
His Zhiji.
Yet,reality hit him hard moments later. When Father called him to his room to talk, he thought it was about how to acknowledge his Red Thread. He was prepared to tell them that he liked Wei Ying. That he loved him, perhaps.
Yet,the conversation became a nightmare for him.
(15 days earlier, Koi Tower, Lanling)
"Wangji." Qingheng-Jun greeted his son as he bowed and sat quietly. There was no visible expression on his face.
"Fuqin." Wangji silently supplied before serving tea.
"You found your Zhiji today. Wei Wuxian is it?" Qingheng-Jun maintained his composure well despite the thing he was going to tell.
"Yes Fuqin. I think Wei... Young Master Wei is an honoured cultivator." Wangji carefully spoke. He was nervous.
Qingheng-Jun silently considered his next words.
"Do you remember what I told you of the Sunshot campaign?" He asked.
Lan Wangji stiffened. Since, the last decade no one has spoken of this matter in their Sect. It was considered a taboo topic. Yes,they were taught in history about it in detail but that was that. Lan Sect suffered a great damage from the last attack the Qishan Wens rained on them.
Wangji was 6. Xichen was 9. However why is his Father bringing it up now?
"That attack was due to our spy betraying us. Betraying by revealing the entire map of Cloud Recesses at the crucial moment." Qingheng-Jun spoke, a bitter feeling tingling at his throat.
Lan Wangji's body trembled with rage. Only the 3000 disciplines stopped him from violently lashing out.
Why was he never told of this? Not in class? Never? Such an information...!?
Due to that attack,his Mother.....
No. No.
He needs to know the truth. Does Xiongzhang know?
"None of the Cultivators of your generation know. I decided it then as I was the Chief Cultivator. You are probably the first. Not many knew that happened actually. The...spy was an important person. Only the 5 main Sects know of his identity," Qingheng-Jun paused glancing at his son to see his facade broken, confusion evident on his face.
"Would you like to know?" Qingheng-Jun knew what he was doing went against his Sect rules. But he was afraid. Afraid for his A-Zhan. He didn't want his son to be betrayed by someone later.
"If Fuqin would deem it appropriate, Wangji would like to know," he replied.
"Wei Changze." Qingheng-Jun sighed as Wangji stiffened.
Lan Wangji thought he heard a cruel joke. Surely he heard wrong. He knew the name. The former Sect Leader Wei of Yilling Wei. He was the spy....?
"Fuqin, why...?" Lan Wangji wanted it to be untrue. No.
No.
Not him.
"Sect Leader Wei was unparalleled as a spy. He provided us the intel to attack Nightless City of Qishan. Madam Wei, Cangse Sanren fought in the frontline with Madam Jiang that time. We had almost won the war. But then Cloud Recesses was attacked. Or burned. After investigation,we found it was him...." Qingheng-Jun explained.
"I know this was a lot to process for you. I understand Wei Wuxian is your destined Zhiji. But A-Zhan you have to carefully choose this time. I don't want you to get hurt. For now, you can go back to Cloud Recesses and start your seclusion. I know you want time. Qiren will accompany you." He finished.
Lan Wangji with a blank mind greeted his father back. He flew back to Gusu that very night. More like fled Lanling.
Still. He thought of who he left behind.
Wei Ying.
(Now)
Lan Wangji had to end his seclusion today. Today the disciples would arrive at the guest lectures. He wondered if Wei Ying would be here?? Anyways as the Head Disciple he had a lot of responsibilities. It was early morning when he visited his Father and Uncle in Lanshi, the main hall of Lan Sect.
"Fuqin. Shufu." Lan Wangji bowed.
"Wangji. You are to attend the lectures this year." His Uncle said, nodding thoughtfully.
"Wangji understands." He replied back before taking his farewell and heading to Huashi, his brother's residence.
"Wangji, did you leave seclusion? Come Didi, sit sit." Lan Xichen was surprised to see his brother. His brother who was clearly disturbed.
"Xiongzhang..... Can we... Can we visit the Gentian House today?" Lan Wangji sounded so small that Lan Xichen almost hugged him.
"Yes Wangji. We can. Do you want to go now?" Lan Xichen offered.
Lan Wangji nodded and followed his older brother out.
The Gentian House was located deep inside Cloud Recesses. It was secluded from the rest of the buildings. Surrounded by a garden of blooming blue gentians, it represented a picture of ethereal beauty.
Lan Xichen knocked at the door which was opened by an old lady in Lan colours. The old lady greeted the young masters and led them in. The house was sparse. It had a living room, a main bedroom,a kitchen and a side room.
"Healer Qin, how is she faring?" Lan Xichen as usual began the conversation.
"The same, Young Master." Healer Qin replied.
She led the two to the main room where a beautiful lady lay silently. One could easily mistake her to be in some deep sleep and that she may wake up any moment. Only the latter was not true. For the past ten years Lan Wangji saw his mother in this same condition.
Madam Lan was a beautiful lady. Dressed in the blue robes of Lan Sect, she silently slept as she has since that fateful attack on Cloud Recesses 10 years prior. Healer Qin gave the two brothers privacy as she retreated to her room.
"Wangji would you like to talk to her alone?" Lan Xichen after all understood his baby brother the best.
Lan Wangji silently placed his sword by the stand and sat beside his mother carefully holding her hand.
"Muqin, I met him."
"He is so bright. So beautiful. So talented. So good...."
"He reminds me of you. He teases me like you."
"You would have liked him."
"I don't know if he wants me..... But I want him."
"Am I selfish?"
"Will you wake up ever?"
"I miss you."
"I love him."
Lan Wangji just sat there silently for a few moments more basking in th golden silence.
Having poured his heart out Lan Wangji reverted to his cold self and stepped out. Lan Xichen smiled; so similar to their mother's that it hurts, as he led him back.
They were expected to greet the disciples arriving today. He had decided. He would not seek Wei Ying. Wei Ying would soon forget him as well. It's just a Thread. It doesn't change anything.
He wouldn't seek him.
They were better off not being together. He would just have to bury his unnecessary feelings. Feelings which would do good to noone.
