I was in my room, as usual, always separated from kids my age. It had become my norm, and though I didn't mind, I didn't feel lonely. It was as if someone was always there with me, even if they weren't physically present.

I gazed down at my glowing hands, a soft smile spreading across my face. It felt like an achievement, something I'd worked so hard for. Finally, I'd activated my magic. I couldn't wait to show my mother. But before I could move, a sudden noise from downstairs sent a shiver down my spine.

Dread.

That was all I felt—pure, cold dread. It was a feeling that hit me like a stone, and I knew something was terribly wrong. My intuition never failed me. Some would call it a gift, an ability to predict things before they happened, but I wasn't so sure. All I knew was that the sense of unease in the pit of my stomach was undeniable.

I ran downstairs in a panic, following the sound, and my heart stopped when I saw the scene before me.

My mom was on the floor, covered in blood, her eyes empty, lifeless. I froze, my throat dry, the world suddenly spinning.

"Mama!" I choked out, falling to my knees beside her. The roughness of the ground scraped against my skin, but I didn't care. My only focus was on her, on the woman who had raised me, who had always been there.

Her gaze flickered up at me, weak and fading. "R-run," she croaked, coughing violently, blood spilling from her mouth, making the air thick with a horrible, suffocating weight. I wanted nothing more than to pull her into my arms and take away her pain, but I couldn't. Her words pierced me more than anything else could.

"I can't leave you," I cried, but her eyes closed, and she didn't respond. My heart dropped as the truth hit me hard. My mother was gone. It was a reality I refused to accept, yet it played in my mind like a broken record, each repetition making the air thinner, harder to breathe.

I couldn't stop shaking. My breath came in gasps, hyperventilating, but somehow, I managed to push myself to my feet. My mother had asked me to run, and though every part of me screamed to stay with her, I did as she asked.

I ran.

The woods swallowed me, the night air sharp and biting, but the red eyes that gleamed in the darkness were worse. They glared at me, a malevolent, satisfied gleam that made my stomach turn with disgust.

'Keep running. Don't stop.' I repeated the mantra in my mind, my feet pounding the earth beneath me.

"Don't let her get away!" A voice echoed, the sound of footsteps growing louder as someone chased me.
