-"Your final exam will be the laser beam obstacle course," Miss Faragonda announced as we sat in the lecture hall, bracing ourselves for the big test.
"[Name], come forward, please; you're up first."
I let out an annoyed sigh, muttering, "How troublesome..." I'd rather be anywhere but here right now.
Bloom gave me a playful pat on the back, feigning pity. "It's okay, [Name]."
"It's the circle of life," Tecna said with a shrug, though she threw in a thumbs-up that made me roll my eyes.
"You got this!" Musa grinned, her encouragement actually genuine, while Stella was already absorbed in examining her nails, entirely oblivious to the conversation.
Classic Stella.
Flora, always the caring one, offered me a warm, reassuring smile. "You'll do great! And next school year, I'm sure you won't have to go first."
Despite the teasing, I knew my friends were trying to lift my spirits. Their support brought a small smile to my face, strengthening my resolve. With a newfound determination, I activated my magic, my aura flaring in a brilliant burst of color.
I closed my eyes as I felt myself lift gently off the ground, rising into the sky. Twirling around, I could feel the familiar shimmer of magic washing over me. Sparkles cascaded down my back, and soon, my wings took shape, vibrant and gleaming.
"I have one request, though, since I'm always first," I sighed, frustration lacing my voice. Why was I always chosen to go first?
"Maybe." Miss Faragonda hummed, considering it with a raised eyebrow. "But for now, your goal is to get the floating rose to the pedestal. If you get hit three times, you're out. Go!"
With a quick flutter of my wings, I launched into the air just as the test began. Miss Faragonda's finger glowed green, and in an instant, beams of light streaked toward me.
Dodging the lasers felt instinctive, like my senses were sharper and my stamina higher than ever before. As I darted through the obstacle course, I caught a glimpse of my friends and classmates watching me, their eyes wide with admiration, though I was too focused to react.
My training at the mountain had made me stronger, more confident in my abilities. I twisted into a backflip, narrowly avoiding another barrage of lasers as they sliced through the air.
"That was close..." Musa muttered, her eyebrows furrowing with concern. "You've got this, [Name]! Don't give up!"
Finally, I reached for the rose, grasping it with care, only to wince as a sudden obstacle hit me. Pain shot through my shoulder, but I clenched my jaw and pressed on.
