For some reason, admiring the view outside the window for a long period of time didn't distract me from the fact that I was leaving home for some place I barely knew.

When I told Papa that I was invited to my sister's wedding as her maid of honor, I was not expecting him to be one of the people who were not invited. I couldn't even imagine the thought of my sister getting married without one of her dads to walk her down the aisle. Papa, however, expected it, seeing that Victoria declared that she never wanted to see him ever again and never treated him as her father since our parents' divorce was finalized.

"Everything seems packed. Are you ready to go?" Vienna, who has been assisting me to pack for the past couple of days, asked me, then I shook my head no. She took it as a sign to pour me a cold glass of Sprite and adding in a few teaspoons of strawberry Kool Aid, just the way I loved it, then she gave the drink to me.

"Thank you," I said before sipping from the glass, the refreshing sensation running down my throat intensifying from a want to a need as I took gulps from the drink, reminding myself to thank the gods for letting me live with someone who could make excellent-tasting drinks.

Vienna, or Vi, as she preferred to be called, realized her inner passion for writing and literature five days after she was promoted to sous-chef in one of the most popular fine dining restaurants in Sacramento. When she and Jose, my dad, met, they instantly clicked and bonded over their love for writing fantasy tales, and, four months later, when we were looking for a new place to stay, Vienna offered her place with no hesitation. Moving in to her apartment allowed her and Papa to write together, making them earn a significant achievement from the New York Times with their award-winning fantasy book series, which had been adapted to a popular Netflix show. The media reported them to be dating simply because they live under the same roof, but in reality, they're just close friends and collaborators; plus, a relationship between them would be improbable due to their sexualities.

When I was done with my drink, Vienna happily took the glass and rinsed it at the sink, then she put a record on the turntable near the television. As usual, it was her record that was composed entirely of Bach songs, a common favorite of ours, then she joined me in my quest of looking aimlessly at the boring view.

"Cai?" Vi asked, then I focused on looking at her eyes, which were shielded by a pair of full, wayfarer frames that have been correcting her slightly deteriorated vision since a year ago. After doing the same to my eyes, she held my hands in hers and sighed.

"If there's any part of you right now that wants to miss your flight, I can hide you under my bed until your dad decides to look around for you," Vienna said, causing me to laugh at her humor, which always managed to effortlessly cheer me up.
