Last Day of Summer

•Jason's POV•

There was a week left until school started again. Though I hated the prospect of getting up early and hauling my bags to school for another school year, I also missed the place. I missed the water fights and the teachers, seeing everyone on the first day. The newest students would be carrying backpacks that were double the size of them and they'd end up looking like turtles.

I laughed at the memory of my huge backpack that was now stuffed in the corner of my cupboard, replaced by a smaller and cooler shoulder bag.

I sat in my room, laptop open, waiting for Izzy to come back onto Face Time. We had been talking for over three hours about various things that ranged from why words sounded strange when you repeated them over and over, to how the universe came into existence.

Personally that talk was usually reserved to the shower or at night when you couldn't fall asleep. I argued that there was a Big Bang with all the evidence under the sun, until Izzy was forced to surrender and agree. She had told me that I should become a lawyer because I was a top notch debater.

I sighed loudly and shouted "Izzy!"

Miraculously, after the fourth call, Izzy appeared on the computer screen.

"What took you so long?" I whined playfully.

"Jay, I'd only been gone for five minutes." She laughed at my tone as I stuck out my tongue at her.

"You looking forward to our last year?" I asked, leaning towards the computer screen.

"Yes and no. I mean, who doesn't want to get out of school for good? But I'll miss it. What will you do every morning, if you're not getting ready for school?"

"I'll turn over and stare at you all day." I said, making Izzy blush and blow a kiss at the screen which I gracefully caught and threw one back.

"You're too cute." Izzy giggled.

"I'm coming round." I decided, Izzy looked up from her desk and smiled.

"See you in 20?" She asked, grabbing her phone.

"In 10." Izzy raised her eyebrow, so I explained, "I'll be speeding."

She laughed and opened her bedroom door to tell her mum. "Bye!" She practically shouted and shut her computer screen.

~~~~~
The familiar door swung open before I could raise my hand to knock. I glanced behind Izzy at her messy room and smiled. Jack was an opposite to her when it came to neatness.
"Jack let me in." I explained as I stepped past her and put down my bag.
"What are we going to do?" She asked, "we could bake again, but my mum and Jack will not tolerate the mess."
We both laughed, remembering the time only a few months ago when we made cookies in my kitchen but ended up pouring flour all over each other.
In the end we played on the Wii and being the gentleman that I am, I let Izzy win most of the games.
As we cuddled up on the couch to watch our favourite movie for couples, I started to miss the connection I had with Nathan. Every time Jack stepped into the room to ask us if we wanted anything I immediately noticed Izzy and Jack's pull towards each other.
I swear they could read each other's mind. I was missing out on that all because of some stupid game of hide and seek. But I pushed the thoughts aside and tugged Izzy just a little bit closer.
~~~~~

That night I could only think of Nate. His face that was identical to mine, haunted my sleep, although his eyes held a twinkle that mine could not posses without him next to me.

He always made me laugh, his witty nature rubbed off on me and I remember the countless times that we were called to the office of the nursery school to be reprimanded for the prank we'd pulled the day before. Usually on a fellow classmate or teacher.

His charm got us out of any situation when needed and he easily switched off that charm whenever it pleased him. He was the younger brother but he had an air of confidence and wisdom surrounding him.

Maybe if I saw him again he would be exactly the same. Or maybe he would be completely changed.

I screamed silently into my pillow, I couldn't let him take over my thoughts. Not with my final year to make it count coming up in under a week.

So I shut my eyes and let the rain wash the thoughts away.

~~~~~
"I can't believe it's the last day of summer." Jenna stated, tipping her head back onto Jack's shoulder to enjoy what was left of the mid-afternoon sun that was slowing residing behind some clouds.
"I don't want to go back." Jack said, using one arm to hold him up and the other around Jenna's body.
"Me neither." Cody agreed, lying with his head in Lucy's lap as she played with his hair.
"It's been an amazing holiday though." Izzy interjected, "and you can't say you don't miss seeing everyone."
I smiled at her as I replied, "you are the only one I need to see for my life to be perfect."
"Aw you guys are so cute." Lucy remarked, earning a blush from me as well as 50 shades of tomato from Izzy.
"Cody, why can't you say something like that to me?" She joked, poking her boyfriend in his ribs.
Cody sat up and brushed the hair away from Lucy's eyes before he spoke. "Lucy, sweetie, I love you so much that I don't have to use any words to express how much you mean to me when my eyes do all the talking and my lips do all the proving."
He proceeded to kiss Lucy gently before laying back down, a little victory smirk on his face.
Lucy grinned as the rest of us cheered at Cody's declaration.
This is how it was meant to be. Cody and Lucy staring into each other's eyes, too lost to find their way out. Jenna and Jack laughing at something so small that it draws them closer. And then Izzy and I. Something I never asked for because I did not know that love this powerful existed.
This was the way it had to be. As cheesy as it sounds, with her the stars were aligned and my heart beat had a beat to match.
"Izzy." I said, she was sitting in my lap, back against my chest.
She adjusted herself so that she had turned around and was facing me. After a few moments of silent, breathtaking gazing into her eyes she spoke. "What is it Jay?"
"I love you." I whispered.
And I'll never stop.
It's over, I can't believe it. But never fear, aside from the epilogue (which I've already written) there is a sequel for which you can find a blurby type preview on my profile. It's called 'The Missing One'.
Thanks for everything guys.
