"Mommy look! I think they like me!" The child giggled and looked at the crows that were landing on his head and shoulders. His mother laughed and swatted the birds away. All except one. She sat on the grass and pulled the child into her lap and held her hand out for a crow to land in it. She smiled softly and let her son slowly pet it's head.
"I have to go away again soon." He frowned and nodded. "But this one will stay with you. I need you to take care of her until I get back, can you do that for me?" He nodded and let the bird perch on his finger. "It's gonna watch over you for me, okay? So I need you to take extra special care of her." He smiled and watched as the bird flew back to the rest of the murder. "I love you baby."
"Love you too mama."

He never spoke of his mother as he grew up. When he fought in wars alongside his brother or when he relaxed with his friends as they just talked. His friends talked of their lives before the wars and their parents. His brother spoke of their father sometimes. But whenever he was asked he simply shook his head and looked at an old black bird that watched from a distance.
He smiled when he saw her for even just a moment but frowned knowing their visits wouldn't last long. Maybe he should've been happy knowing it was never more than an hour. It would've made her sad knowing her son would be with her permanently and he didn't like to see his mother sad. So he visited her with a smile and disappeared with a brighter smile than before, though it was strained.
He spoke of her once. And was promptly slapped at the mention of her. His big brother yelled at him in the cave while his other brother looked down sadly. Nobody was there to hear it and the three never spoke of it afterwards. It had been a long time since he saw that crow. He'd been in the cave a long time. When he saw it again it carried a black flower.
"What would mum think?"
"It's not about what she'd think. Do not bring her up around me again."
His cheek felt sore whenever he looked back at that memory. He didn't like that memory. And if he smiled thinking about the conversation his mother definitely had with his brother only a month later then that was his business.
He thought he would see his mother when he looked down at the remains of another explosion. He stood atop a tower and looked down at the ground. He wanted to see his mother. Surely that would be better than what he was dealing with. And as he fell the crow flew next to him. He still needed to take care of it. He promised. And as he got closer to the ground and dove to a water source. His mother wouldn't have been happy with him.
He thought he was going to see his mother again. When a sword was held to his throat as he was guided to an underground base that held everything everyone has ever loved. He thought he would have to introduce his best friend to his mother. He thought he would run to her arms and scream out his soul while she comforted him. He thought about what his mother would do to the masked bastard if she were with them.
He did not see his mother that day. The crow was waiting for him at his house. He brought it in and gave it water and shared his food with it. He promised to take care of it.
He finally did see his mother months later. He remembered the image of the smiling mask above him then awoke to being held by a familiar warm face. He smiled and let the tears fall. They clung to each other for weeks maybe. It felt like weeks. He told his mother about what had happened. He told her about everything she missed and his time before travelling with his brother.
He reunited with his brother after another week with his mother. It wasn't a very pleasant reunion.
They thought he would've been there forever, as much as she seemed to hate that idea. She loved him of course and would do absolutely everything to see him again but not like this. But eventually the day came and he started fading in her arms. She smiled at him. He frowned and screamed about not wanting to leave her. Then he woke up with the same smiling mask standing over him.
The crow was waiting for him outside the prison. He smiled and held it as he cried.
His brother returned only two months later. He was blamed for his brothers return, of course. But with his brother came a message from his mother and that was the happiest he had been since his visit.
"Mother told me to tell you that she would be visiting soon. No idea when. But that doesnt matter, I'm here!"
"You shouldn't joke about her."
"I promised not to lie."
He had waited. and waited.. and waited... and waited. Nothing. He continued taking care of the bird while following his brother. The only time he asked about it his brother simply ignored him and continued whatever he was doing. He had stopped paying attention to what his brother was saying after being ignored.
He heard news of her from one of his friends. A forest had appeared in the arctic. The man he called his father talked about someone supposedly named "Her". His friend was confused when he explained pronouns. But that wasn't what was important. He had to examine the forest. Especially since the crow cawed after hearing about the forest.
The familiar trip to the arctic was rushed as he ran. The crow flew beside him until they stopped at the community portal. He smiled at it and held his arms out. The black bird cawed before settling in his arms as they made their way through the nether. He was careful to not fall into the lava ocean or any holes but the excitement of possibly seeing his mother made it hard to wait.
The sudden change of temperature from exiting the hot nether to the cold of the snow biome was never something he would like but he managed to push through. He wrapped the crow under his jacket and started walking to the familiar cabins that held many memories from after he had tried to visit his mother. He never liked thinking back to the time in exile.
They stopped at the top of a hill and looked over the thick forest that was definitely enchanted and pulled right out of a fairytale he was told as a toddler. He smiled and perched the crow onto his shoulder. Nobody else seemed to be around. His father and brother were probably in the cabin. He rolled his eyes before being pulled out of his thoughts by a peck on his head.
"Yeah yeah, let's go."
He slid down the hill and walked into the beautiful forest. He noticed the beautiful flowers he knew represented death and softly waved to them. They danced in the soft breeze appearing to wave back.
"Hello little one." Tommy froze and looked at the woman in front of him. Her warm smile brought comfort that contrasted with the snowy biome they were in. He felt himself smiling in return. "Well? Aren't you going to give your mother a hug?" He laughed and nodded before running and launching himself into his mothers arms.
