Y/N POV
It was the last race of the season. Throughout this season, I have been very consistent over the races. Even though I was not leading the championship, I was at least beating my main rival Nicholas Latifi in the overall points. Things were really looking positive for me heading into the last race and it looks like I was going to move up towards the European Formula 3 Championship with Prema in the upcoming season. All I had left to do this race was to put in a good performance.
Laguna Seca, one of the most iconic tracks in the motorsport world of USA. This is the location of where the final race of this USF2000 championship will be held. It's a track that I have experienced a lot in video games and I absolutely love that track, especially The Corkscrew. I'm really looking forward to this race as I have really been enjoying my first season in single seaters and hopefully I could end the season at a high.
Qualifying went well for me as many drivers struggled to navigate the tricky Corkscrew corner bringing multiple yellow flags during the session. It was really difficult to get in a clean lap with all the yellow flags, but I managed to get a decent lap time despite all the interruption during the session. At the end of the session, I placed my car 3rd on the grid which was the best I ever did in the whole season and most importantly Nicholas Latifi and Logan Sargaent qualified behind me.
Kenny: Y/N that was a great qualifying. We are in a really good chance of winning the race later. Just make sure to keep away from trouble at The Corkscrew. Anything to report back from the car after qualifying?
Y/N: The car felt good all around the session but I think we could have a little bit more front so we could turn into The Corkscrew while following.
Kenny: No worries we will make the changes you requested.
After the qualifying debrief, I went to prepare for the race as the engineers tweak the setup for the race. While preparing, I suddenly bumped into Paul Beauvie.
Paul Beauvie: Hey Y/N, good qualifying today. I'll be keeping an eye on you for the race.
Y/N: Thanks Mr. Beauvie.
Lining up on P3 on the grid, there was a really good chance of us winning the race from this position. With me mathematically unable to win the championship, I have to take risks in order to impress the Prema performance engineers to hopefully seal the deal very soon.
At the start of the race, I have managed to get a good jump on the driver starting from second place and was behind the leader heading into turn 1. This was exactly the start that I wanted and that means I can put pressure on the leader, ready to pounce whenever he makes a mistake. However, with the dirty air I was given trying to follow and overtake the leader, I was struggling to keep up with the pace and was lapping slower than the leader with the reduced grip as a result of dirty air.
Kenny: Ok Y/N, keep on him. A gap of 1.2 seconds would be optimal for us, so that's delta plus 0.8.
Dropping back to the optimal 1.2 seconds, I was sitting comfortably in P2. With the team wanting me to maintain a 1.2 second gap to the car in front, it means that I am a bit too far to make any sort of overtaking manoeuvre on the car in front. So all I have to do is wait for the leader to hopefully make a mistake and monitor my gap to Nicholas Latifi who is in P3.
Few laps later, I saw the driver in the lead starting to struggle with the tyres going off trying to pull a gap off me. As he head into The Corkscrew, he locked up the rear tyres, lost the car and went wide. I saw my opportunity closed the gap and took the lead heading into the final corner. Once I got the move done, I held off the charge from the car behind heading into turn one. Locking up a little bit heading into turn one I still managed to keep my car in the lead.
It was a quiet final few laps, but I held off the car behind to see the chequered flag first to win the race at Laguna Seca. This is the moment that I have been working for ever since I started karting. Even though it's not winning the championship, to win my first ever race in single seater is very special to me, especially at Laguna Seca, a track that I have been racing around on video games since I was a kid.
Kenny: Y/N, WELL DONE YOU JUST WON THE RACE!!!!!!!
Y/N: HAHA! Thanks guys, car was brilliant this race.
It feels amazing to stand on the top step of the podium. Every drivers raced for this moment since they started racing. Sure you might get soaked in champagne on the podium, but it was all worth it. After the podium celebrations, I headed back to the paddock and prepared to head back home after winning the race, until Paul Beauvie flagged me down.
Paul Beauvie: Congratulations Y/N for winning the race. The team was impressed with your performance and are really interested to sign you on for the next couple of seasons. I will contact you in the upcoming weeks to sort out the contract and seat fit.
Y/N: Thank you Mr. Beauvie. Looking forward to working with you and joining Prema.
As I left the track, I was very excited at the prospect of racing for Prema. They are one of the biggest teams in the junior categories of single seater and have promoted many drivers into Formula 1 in the past. I feel like my career and my path to Formula 1 is finally on track even though it has only begun.
Finally another chapter on this book. Sorry but this book will have slow updates as I want to focus on my other book first. Feel free to check out Trequartista Across The World, it's a footballer x Tzuyu fan fiction.
