Maybe This Isn't Goodbye

Sunny's POV

"I can't believe the school year is nearly over." Mia Fernandez said. "We took our final exams yesterday, what's the point of even going to classes anymore?"

"We're all getting on a plane and heading home in two weeks, guys. Am I the only one who's not excited for summer vacation? I mean, we can see our family again, I can see Emileigh, but..." Evie Shubert said. "I'll miss you guys."

"I'll miss Harley. It's hard dating someone who lives on a whole other continent." Grace Khatri said. "I'll miss Lars. He's trying to convince their mom to let her go to the UK for a week to see me, but his mom isn't budging."

"In her defense, Grace, flights from Samoa to London are...expensive and long." I said. "But...on the other hand, he did survive a flight from Samoa to California, however, our tuition paid for the airfare."

Mia looked troubled and I could see tears forming in her eyes. "Tuition." she said softly.

"Mia...are you okay?" I asked. Mia shook her head and said, "I went to this school on a scholarship. My family can't afford for us to pay out of pocket. I'm scared that I won't be able to go to this school next year. I love this place. It's way better than the school I went to at home, when I was picked on a bunch because I liked to sing."

"That's awful. And you're one of the strongest singers in this school, maybe even in this town." Grace said, and Mia gave her a soft smile.

Lars stood up, about to cry himself. And Lars rarely cries, they're usually a very happy-go-lucky person and loves to laugh. So seeing Lars cry broke all of our hearts in two.

"I'm here on a scholarship too." Lars said in a barely audible voice, her voice breaking with tears. He wiped some of their tears on her arm and said, "Sorry...I'm just...emotional. I just...if I can't graduate from this school, I'll be crushed."

I knew I had to do something. My family paid out of pocket for my tuition, but I didn't know if they could afford paying for the tuition of two other people.

Then I got my bright idea. I ran to my closet and pulled out my jewelry box. I rarely wear jewelry, but my mom said to bring it just in case I had to go to a formal event. I dug through the piles of necklaces and bracelets and earrings, until I found the thing I was really looking for.

"Mia, Lars, I wanna...help you." I said. They both turned towards me and looked at me with confusion. I sighed and put something in their hands.

"These are my great grandpa's medals from World War Two. They're probably worth a decent amount, and they could help pay for you guys to go to this school for at least one more year." I said.

"Sunny, that's a family heirloom, don't sell it." Mia said.

"My friends are worth more to me than these stupid medals. My great grandpa always taught me to put other's needs before my own. He taught me to be a good human being and to be selfless. He died last year, and I think this is what he would've wanted." I said.

"Sunny...you don't have to..." Mia said.

"No. There's no stopping her. I know Sunny like the back of my hand. She would drop everything to help a friend. She may be competitive and crush her opponents dead, but she's secretly a sweetheart." Evie said. I smiled and then said, "I'm gonna go over to the auctioneer's and see how much these things are worth. Since they aren't from the US, they're probably worth more."

"Thank you, Sunny. I cannot thank you enough." Lars said. I couldn't help but smile at my friend.

________

"So? How much?" Grace said as I came into the room with a check.

"Fifteen thousand dollars. Way, way, way more than enough." I said. All my friends cheered and Lars started crying happy tears.

"MAJORITY MINORITY'S BACK IN BUSINESS, BABY!" Lars cheered.
