(AN: Hi, this is Emmy here to say...I'm sorry for the spur-of-the-moment angst. Love you guys!)
Grace's POV
Today was the day I've been waiting for all summer. My best friends from school were going to come visit me in London, and I couldn't wait another second for them to come. My mom and I were driving to the airport to pick my friends up, and I was bouncing up and down in the backseat.
"Grace, calm down, we're almost there!"
"I can't calm down! I'm seeing my friends today and I had way more coffee than a sixteen year old is supposed to, and you know darn well I'm a very hyperactive child! Main intajaar nahin kar sakata! Main intajaar nahin kar sakata! Main intajaar nahin kar sakata!"
"Grace Advika! I am trying to drive!" my mother snapped.
"Fine." I groaned, pulling out my phone and playing a game for a few minutes. I was distracted by my mom snapping her fingers at me about ten minutes later.
"Grace Advika, clean up the backseat!" she said. "Your friends need to sit there!"
"We're going to have to take more than one car, remember? Mia has her license so she's gonna rent a car for her and Evie." I said.
"How old is Mia again?"
"My age, Mom...we're in the same grade..." I said. My mom was about to say something more, but then was interrupted by my phone noisily ringing. "Hold up, Mom, someone's calling me. Oh, it's Sunny! She's already here?"
"Who's Sunny again?"
"The Japanese girl, she's the one that I told you was training for the Olympics. She loves sports. Hold on, let me take this call. Hello?" I said. After a few seconds of static I said, "Sunny, I love you, but your cell service is horrible. I can't hear a word you're saying...wait. Are you speaking in Japanese? Is that why I can't understand you."
"No, Grace, I'm speaking in English." Sunny said softly. A little too softly. Sunny was usually loud and energetic, so hearing her speak this quietly worried me a bit.
"Sunny, are you okay? You never talk this quietly." I said.
"Grace, I don't know how to tell you this without shattering your heart in a million pieces, but...you know what, just get to the airport and I'll tell you then."
"I'm in the parking garage and it's so crowded here...just tell me now, I can handle it." I said. I took a deep breath, getting a strange gut feeling that I would not be able to handle whatever Sunny was about to tell me.
"Grace...Lars' plane crashed a few hours ago, they're in the hospital and the last I heard, she's in a coma." Sunny said. I frantically tapped my mom on the shoulder and said, "Mom. Mom. Park the car, I have to get out of here."
________
I saw Mia Fernandez and Evie Schubert in the hospital lobby and ran up to them, giving them huge hugs. If this actually went well, I would be hugging my friends with happiness, not clinging onto them for fear Lars would die.
"Where's Sunny?" I asked.
"She's in Lars' room. Lars' mother's gonna take a flight here from Samoa, and I'm not looking forward to seeing her. We didn't exactly leave off on a good note. But this isn't about Lars' horrible mother, this is about Lars themselves."
"Can we see him?" I asked, and then I heard rapid beeping coming from the hospital room. Mia's expression grew worried and then she said, "That can't be good."
One of the doctors came out and Evie tapped on his shoulder.
"What happened to our friend Larson? Is he okay?" Evie asked. The doctor looked to all of us and sighed.
"Lucas died three minutes ago."
__________
"No. No. NOOOOOOO." I screamed.
"Grace!" I heard someone say, and I shot awake. "Grace. Did you have a nightmare or something?"
"Lars?" I asked. I blinked and looked next to me. "LARS!" I gave my best friend a huge hug and he laughed.
"You fell asleep in the car as soon as Mia picked it up. We've been driving around for a half hour waiting for you to wake up." Lars said. "Also, Grace, I love you, but you need to let go. I kinda need to breathe?"
"Oh, yeah, sorry. It's just that...in the nightmare I had, you got in a plane crash and died." I said. Lars looked at me weirdly and said, "You're saying that way too casually. Anyway, I'm not dead, Grace! I got here safely, though my flight got delayed."
"Oh, thank God." I said. Sunny laughed from the passenger seat and said, "You guys ready to have the best two weeks of our lives."
"HECK YEAH!" we all said at the same time.
