You had spent more time planning JJ's birthday than you would've liked to admit.

It wasn't even a big birthday party with cake and tourists from all kinds of places you couldn't even pronounce, it was just you and him.

At first you were scared of the idea, just the two of you, you weren't even a couple. What were you guys going to talk about? But you knew JJ, things were never awkward with him and you knew that better than anyone.

Making eye contact with yourself in the mirror, you blow out a shaky breath, feeling a bit more nervous than you liked, and grabbed your concealer that you hid away for special occasions.

Luckily, it wasn't a super hot day, warm, but nothing near scorching. Still, you applied light makeup. Besides, your hand was shaking slightly and you weren't sure if you could trust yourself to not mess up your eyeliner.

"Yeah, I got this," you cheered for yourself, straightening imaginary creases on your new, floral dress.

You grabbed a sweater and a small canvas bag, throwing everything you needed inside.

The walk was short to John B's house, which is where you were meeting JJ, but today it felt even shorter with your nerves building up. You wondered if JJ also felt this nervous.

Finally catching sight of his familiar blond hair, you forced your hands to unclench and you walk up to him with a bright smile.

You look at JJ in his loose long sleeve shirt and casual summer shorts and feel slightly too dressed up, even in your own worn sneakers.

"Hey, what are you doing here?" JJ asks you and you realize you've caught him mid-adventure time with his black backpack and John B standing three steps behind him.

You exchange awkward glances with the two boys, suddenly feeling very out of place. He . . . didn't remember?

You weren't entirely crushed, you forgot things all the time, but you had spent so long planning everything and you were possibly even more excited for his birthday than he was himself.

"I—uh," you stutter, embarrassment seeping through as you struggle to speak. "It's your birthday today."

"I know," JJ nods with a short smile. "John B reminded me this morning. It had completely slipped my mind."

"And . . . we were planning to meet today. To, you know, hang out," you continue, feeling a bit out of place.

You hadn't expected him to show up in a suit and tie and wrap you in his arms in appreciation, but how could you have been so nervous and he hadn't even remembered his birthday, never mind your guys' plans?

"Oh—right, that . . ." JJ shot John B a certain look. "I gotta do this first, JB." He said this as if it was a chore he needed to complete before going out with friends.

"No worries, but hurry back, we can't waste any more time. We'll fill you in later," John B sends you a smile before heading back into the house.

You begin walking down the rocky roads and JJ instantly begins talking about the gold.

"It's 500 million," he emphasizes. "Do you know what you could do with that?"

"A lot, I bet," you answer dryly. You know the conversation could go better, but after several attempts to stray away from the topic of the gold, you're not sure what to do.
